My secondary phone vibrated. I took it out.

Viktor. 745. 1701 Collins Avenue.

Cian.25.

I slipped my phone back in my pocket. I had two guns on me, and I contemplated what else to take with me. It wasn’t every day that Viktor Vinogradov contacted me. We always talked in code, and he wanted to meet tonight. Despite him being a Pakhan of the Bratva, I could trust him.

Elijah frowned. “Where are we going?”

I shook my head. “This is family business. I can’t take you with me. I won’t be long and I have both of my phones if you need to contact me.”

Without another word, I left the house.

“Watch your back,” said Elijah.

It wasn’t long before I slipped inside the hotel. Viktor hadn’t put his room number down but he didn’t need to.

After entering through the side door behind a drunken couple, I went into the elevator, and punched the button for the penthouse. If there was one thing I knew about Viktor, it was that he always stayed in the penthouse. Once the doors opened, I stepped out and knocked on the door. He opened it. I crossed the threshold as soon as the elevator door closed.

He smiled. “I asked you to meet me in person to let you know that your problem has been dealt with and you won’t spend one day behind bars. Everything has been taken care of.

How did Viktor do it? Dad couldn’t even assure me that I wasn’t going to prison.

Viktor walked over to the bar and poured himself a shot. He didn’t resume speaking until he was facing me again. “I have a meeting with your father in a few days. As you know, your father and I haven't had business dealings before but I'm hoping to change that.

He's always calculating and planning. What has him thinking that the Russians and Irish should partner?

“I know you don't have much to do with the family business but that will change soon. No one is aware of our friendship. For now, I want you to keep it to yourself.”

I frowned. Viktor was strategic and powerful. Dad had better get his head out of his ass and do business with him. Viktor was trustworthy. He had a way off turning millions into billions while maintaining his integrity and honesty. If he said he was going to do something, he did it. It was just one of the many qualities I admired; his bluntness was a close second.

I nodded. “There’s something else on your mind Vik, so spit it out.”

“Do you know why the authorities are putting so much time and money into nailing you? I don't know if you've had time to figure out who's behind it.”

No, but I plan to find out.

Viktor drank his liquor. “Felix Aslanov is behind it. He wants to kill you, trick your father into acting reckless and kill him too in the process.”

I knew Dad cared about me; however, I doubted even my death would make him behave so reckless that he would allow his enemies to assassinate him.

“I know you've resisted stepping into the family business, but in the end, you are who you are. One day you will run the business.”

Looking away, I took a deep breath. Viktor wasn’t wrong. The thought of it filled me with anxiety because I had different plans for my life. My fate was my destiny and I could either embrace it or let it crush me.

My lips thinned. “I know things have changed in a blink of an eye.”

“That’s why I'm seeking an alliance with your father. I've been planning this for a while, and Felix’s time is drawing near. We’re living in perilous times. Not all battles need to be fought with guns and explosives. I’m not focused on the battle but the war.”

I hope Dad does ask me about Vik. He’s strategic and knows everything happening around him.

The O’Brien family would be strengthened with an alliance with Vinogradov Bratva.

Viktor sat down in the chair. “I'm not telling you this to influence his decision. The decision must come from him. My plan requires progressive thinking and innovation. You need to watch your back. Felix is up to no good and the O’Brien’s aren't the only family he's targeting.”

Felix Aslanov.
