Casper’s trails his hand down my throat and across my collarbone, his touch leaving a path of fire and ash. I think I actually might die.

“We need to stop,” I say.

“Why?” is his muffled response as he kisses the corner of my mouth. He’s going for the neck. I know this move, and it’s game over if I let him get there.

“Casper,” I say, laughing and pushing him away. “We’re not having sex in your utility room. I’m still mad at you.”

“Why not? It’s clean,” he says, ignoring the fact that I just said I’m angry with him.

“Yeah, because the hygiene status is why we can’t do this.” I gesture towards the door, where a lot of people are still enjoying the copious amounts of alcohol on the other side.

“I don’t care about them. You just told me you want me.”

“Yeah,” I whisper, smiling at the memory of his reaction and how fast he moved once those words hung in the air. “I want to do this, but not in here. I want to be in your bed.”

“Fine. Let’s go to my room.”

“After the party or it’ll be obvious. I’ll go out first; you wait a few minutes.”

His face lights up in the most gorgeous smile that makes me rethink my utility room issues. “Do you want to sneak around with me, Ainsley?”

The way he says it makes it sound so dirty.

I swallow and nod. Yes. Yes, I do want to sneak around. That way I can lie to myself and pretend that it’s normal to sleep with a man who almost ruined your life.

“All right, we’ll go with thatfor now,” he replies before he opens the door. He’s still standing behind it, so if anyone looks in, they will only see me.

I’m not going to dwell on the ‘for now’ comment because I don’t really know what I want to happen from here.

The physical side of ‘us’ is out of this world, but how could we ever have anything more? I don’t trust him.

Wiping the stupid smile off my face, I flatten my hair and walk back into the hallway. No one bats an eyelid at me walking out of the utility room, so I continue into the kitchen.

Freya and Imani are nowhere to be seen, so I help myself to a rather large glass of rosé, then go in search of someone I know. I half want to find Mason again just to piss Casper off, but he might hold back as punishment.

Drinking my wine as I go, I find Imani cuddled up to Marvin on the sofa. He’s deep in conversation with a guy I recognise from uni.

Imani notices me approaching and scoots up.

“Hello,” I say.

“Well, you certainly look happier now.”

I hold my glass up. “Good wine will do that.”

So will kissing the crap out of your hot, villainous neighbour.

“Here, here,” she replies, clinking her glass with mine. “Ains, I don’t want all of this to end.”

“Drink up,” I tell her.

I’m not ready to think about how close final exams are. We’ll be graduating and leaving soon. I’ve not even thought about where I’ll live. I’m hoping that the Harts’ party will bring more opportunities for me to work. That means I’ll likely have to find a place nearby.

Casper has another three years at uni.

Not that I need to factor him into my plans.

“Ainsley?” Imani says, pulling on my free arm.
