“Yeah, thanks.”

I might as well not be here.

“There’s nothing wrong with the library,” I say, defending the books.

Talk to me. Fight with me.

He replies, deadpan, as if I’m nothing, “If you say so.”

Oh, shit, he’s really mad.

“If you two are going to argue, I’m going to the gym,” Reggie says.

“We’ve done what we need for now,” I tell him. “If you want to hit the gym, that’s fine.”

Casper tilts his head to the side, wondering where I’m going with this. To him, it’s an obvious excuse to get Reggie out of the house.

“Yeah?” Reggie asks. “Because I don’t think I can look at another spreadsheet today.”

“Sure. I’ll go now, anyway. Need another read of the dissertation and a nap.”

“Have my coffee, Casper. I’m out of here.” Reggie laughs and leaves the kitchen.

Yeah, he’s onto us.

Casper folds his arms over his chest as Reggie leaves the house. He’s waiting for me to start.

“When I said the walk of shame, you understood what I meant, right?” I ask, taking a step closer to him. “It’s just a phrase.”

He stiffens as if something disgusting is approaching him. “It doesn’t matter, Ainsley. I’m just here to fuck you. Take your clothes off.”

“Fuck off. Do you realise how ridiculous you’re being?”

“Yes. Congratulations. I haven’t been anything other than moronic since we met.”

It’s not the best apology, granted, but I’ve never been able to keep a level head when it comes to him.

“As if this is all my fault. What do you expect me to think? Weagreed to sneak around. The sex is incredible, and you know it. I’m not ashamed, but that doesn’t mean I want everyone to know my business.”

“Youare the one who said we should sneak around. I was happy for the whole house to know, if you remember. But don’t panic, no one will know about our sordid secret from me.”

His knuckles turn white as he clenches his fists against his thighs.

“My head is spinning, Casper. I don’t know what the hell you want from me, and I don’t know how to trust anything to do with you.”

“I don’t want anything from you.”

“Besides sex, right? Because Casper Hart doesn’t do relationships. You know what, you sulk here, and I’ll see you when you can give me a straight answer.”

His eyes laser into me as I storm past him and slam his front door behind me.

I’ve left my notes and bag behind, but thankfully, my phone is in my pocket. Freya’s home so I won’t be locked out. I’d wander the neighbourhood until someone came home before I knocked on Casper’s door.

Freya has left a note on the counter, stating that she’s deep in revision in her room so I’m not to disturb her. I make a mental note to take her dinner, as last year she kept forgetting to eat.

At least with her in work mode I won’t have to talk to anyone yet.

While I’m semi-alone in the house, I make a call to my aunt and uncle to check in, reply to Flora’s email, and read my dissertation again.
