“It was all I was going to get.”

I shake my head. “You could have had so much more.”

“Are you sure about that? Every time we were in the same room, you stared daggers at me. You still do it.”

“Well, maybe if you…” I stop there because I don’t really know what I want to say. Nothing will change the past.

“You wouldn’t have listened, sweetheart. You’d made your mind up about me.”

“Why didn’t you just ignore me going forward? It doesn’t make sense. We’ve said some horrible things to each other.”

“I tried to ignore you for two weeks. It was hell. I couldn’t get you out of my mind, couldn’t stop myself from walking past your building in the hope I’d catch a glance at you. I would rather have your venom than your silence.”

“Oh.”

He pulls me even closer until there’s absolutely no distance between us. “Oh? Is that all you can say?”

“Hey, this is all new and kind of surprising. I’m having a hard time keeping up. Casper Hart wanted me.”

“He still does, just so we’re crystal clear.”

“I’ve spent such a long time and so much energy thinking of things to say to you.”

His smile is blinding. “You plan your insults?”

“I have a bank of them for emergencies.”

“Wow, you really are obsessed with me. I’m going to need to hear them.”

“Shut up.” I playfully push him, the sunflower hitting his chest, but he doesn’t let me go anywhere.

From the moment we found ourselves in bed together, I should have known everything was going to change. I felt it but didn’t acknowledge it.

God, it’s only been days… with nearly three years of the weirdest foreplay.

“When did things change for you?” he asks.

“When you stayed after we heard that noise in my garden. I realised I felt safe with you. It hit me kind of hard because you weren’t someone I would usually think to turn to. It was instinctual. It made me think that you’re not that bad. I mean, you never slept with my aunt or set fire to my house.”

His brows pull together. “Those are the two things that are too far?”

“You don’t agree?”

“Oh, I agree. It’s just… a strange place you went to there.”

“You know what I mean. You’re lucky I don’t have getting me arrested on my deal-breaker list.”

He smirks. “Sometimes I was so sure that you would never look at me in any other way than as an enemy.”

“I hadn’t planned to, in fairness. Not until I got to know the real you… or getting to know you, anyway. There are still lots of holes. Marvin and Reggie kept telling me that you weren’t actually a massive prick.”

“Good to know they have my back.”

I nudge his chest, tightening my fist around his T-shirt in case he thinks about moving away from me. “You know what I mean. They said I was wrong about you, and don’t tell them, but they were right. I wish I’d taken the time to get to know you that first night. I’m sorry for that.”

“I like the way things have happened.”

I frown. “Years of arguing?”
