“We were just having a chat,” Bill says, slapping Casper on the back.

My eyes widen. I remember when he did the same with Zach. It was embarrassing as hell and nearly put Zach off. But Casper is… let’s face it, obsessed. We both are. I don’t think, after everything we’ve been through, a warning from my uncle is going to make him run.

Casper takes the seat beside me, leaving nothing between us. I wriggle a little, and he takes the hint, putting his arm around me and holding me closer.

“What happened?” I ask when Bill and Jess start a conversation.

“Nothing.”

“Bullshit. Tell me.”

Smirking, he shakes his head. “It was a private conversation.”

“It was aboutme.”

“Yes. Privately.”

“Casper, come on.”

“Sorry.”

Oh my God, he’s really not going to tell me.

“You got a warning.”

His lips twitch as he tries not to react.

“I’m right.”

“Then, you don’t need me to tell you. Will you have enough time before your exam if we leave tomorrow?”

“I was planning on doing that, anyway. I actually feel better being here; less stressed. There’s no more preparing that I can do, and to be honest, constantly thinking about it was only making it worse.”

“So, we leave early, and you head straight into the exam.”

I nod once. “Yep. No stressing. Don’t let me think about it even once.”

Freya and I are both so good at working ourselves up over our exams. It doesn’t help one bit.

“Prepare for plenty of distractions,” he replies, his methods of distraction evident in the dirty expression on his face.

I can tell I’m going toreallylike not thinking about uni all night.

CHAPTERTHIRTY

Casper’s powers of distraction should be bottled up and sold. I walked into the exam hall feeling relaxed for the first time ever, confident that I knew my stuff.

We left my aunt and uncle’s first thing. Casper dropped me off at uni and headed straight to court to assist one of his dad’s friends—some hotshot lawyer Casper’s been working alongside. I was too busy staring at him driving to remember any names. He’d never looked so at ease with one hand on my thigh and the other resting casually on top of the steering wheel, a light smile on his face the whole way.

I get butterflies just thinking about it.

He only called me a creep for staring at him five times.

Reggie and I leave the hall after our final exam with me practically floating. Not heading into it after a night of thinking ‘I can’t do this’ made such a difference to my self-esteem.

All I have to do now is submit my dissertation, then I have finished university.

That’s it. Done. Over. I’m ready, yet also so unprepared, I shouldn’t be allowed to leave. I link my arm through Reggie’s, leaning against his side as the enormity of our achievement hits me. Blood, sweat and tears have gone into reaching this point. There were times over the last few years when I didn’t think I could do it. Countless times I wanted to pack my things and go home.
