He shrugs. “Not at first because of how the entry methods changed, but maybe it was. The neighbour on the other side of you was home, so they could’ve thought it would be safer going in the back.”

“Why risk it? Casper’s car was outside, so they knew someone was home,” Reggie says.

“My father hasn’t ended up in prison six times for being smart. My mum’s been arrested and cautioned a couple of times for the shit she does when she’s high, too. Dad was released recently and hit a few houses, sold some stolen goods, then bought drugs. They knew Casper has money and, fuelled by opioids or whatever they’re on now, they thought it was worth the risk.”

Reggie nods. “So, they’re behind them all?”

“That prick was released about two weeks before the break-ins started, so it looks like it.”

I shudder. “I hate the thought of them hanging around here for weeks while I had no idea.”

“Why would they come here?” Casper asks.

“I don’t know. Sometimes my mum briefly tries to be a mum. Dad would’ve been clean coming out of prison, so maybe he agreed to look me up. Wouldn’t have taken him long to see an opportunity. Student houses up and down the street. We’re all out for large parts of the day and even larger parts of the night.”

“They’re not coming near you again,” Casper says.

“Oh, really? You going to be my bodyguard?”

He leans closer and whispers against my lips, “I’ll guard that body—”

“All right! Ainsley, can we go now?” Reggie asks. “I can’t watch this.”

“Blow it off. You can over plan, you know.” Casper says.

“Tell our lecturer that,” I reply. “We have a final walkthrough of the event with the manager. We’re giving them a copy of where everything is supposed to go.”

Casper arches a brow. “Do you really expect me to believe you’re going to leave the decorating up to them?”

“Well… okay, we’ll be there, but it’s easier if everyone has a plan. The fewer fires we have to put out on the day, the better. Are you staying with me that night? I have a room booked.”

“What do you think?” he asks, leaning in to finally kiss me on the lips.

“If you two don’t end that shit, I will leave.”

“Bye,” Casper mutters against my mouth.

“Okay.” I stand abruptly so he has no time to stop me, and he protests with a groan. “Are you tagging along, or do you need to get any other criminals off some murder charges?”

Reggie snorts and grabs his phone.

“I’ve set all the serial killers free that I need to today. Use me as you wish.” He laughs and stands up. “You have a very dirty face right now, Ains.”

“Christ, I’ll meet you guys outside.” Reggie throws us a look of disgust and leaves. I bet he’s proud, really.

“I like the idea of you being my assistant.”

He takes my hand as we walk. I see a couple of people do a double take, pretending they haven’t seen us but clearly whispering about it. I guess if anyone on campus has noticed us before now, we’ve always be yelling.

“Do not get used to it. I’m not assistant material,” Casper says.

“Haven’t you been assisting lawyers for years?”

“Do you want me to come to you tonight, because I can always stay home...”

It’s a crap and meaningless threat. We’re not going to be able to spend the night apart, and he knows it.

“I’d rather you didn’t leave, to be honest.”
