He pushes the door open and smiles down at me like I’ve just made his whole life. “It will never be for long. I promise.”

CHAPTERTHIRTY-ONE

“How big is his cock?”

“How long have you been sneaking around?”

“Have we forgiven him for having you arrested?”

“What’s he like as aboyfriend?”

“Does he make sure you come, too?”

My two wonderful best friends fire off a string of questions before I have the opportunity to answer them. Imani and Freya are both leaning forwards, wide-eyed, and hungry for sordid details.

“Ainsley!” Imani throws a hand up, almost spilling the wine on her other hand.

“If you’d let me get a word in—”

Freya whacks Imani, hushing her before she can speak again. “Let her talk. Answer every question, Ains.”

“I’m working on the arrest thing; it’s not forgotten. There’s more to the story that I don’t know about yet. He always makes sure I’m taken care of in bed.”

“We had more questions than that,” Imani says.

“I can’t remember them.”

She lifts a perfect brow. “You remember the big cock thing.”

“Right. Yes, he does. That car definitely isn’t compensating for anything.”

“How long have you been sleeping together?” Freya asks.

“The first time was when my mum showed up, but we’d kissed once before that. I wasn’t sure what the hell was happening at first. I mean, we hated each other. Neither of us was good at staying away after that, though.”

Imani’s lips curl. “I knew it.”

“You knew what?”

“That he was crazy about you. If he really hated you, he would have stayed away. You’ve both put far too much effort into being enemies.”

Freya nods in agreement. “You should’ve slept together years ago.”

“He told me he didn’t just want a one-night stand when we first met at that party. I got the wrong idea based on how he was behaving.”

“Wait, he was a total womaniser back then. Are you saying that he wanted to jump into a relationship?”

“He didn’t put it quite like that, but he said he wasn’t looking for a one-time thing with me.”

“So… that’s exactly what he was saying, then,” Imani says, deadpan.

“Well, I guess.”

Casper wanted to be exclusive from the beginning. He could’ve told me.

“It doesn’t really matter. You’re together.” Freya laughs. “That’s still wild to me.”

“Only it kind of does matter. We can’t just pretend the past didn’t happen, right? I don’t think I can go forwards without an explanation.”
