“What made you choose journalism?” I ask, moving a little closer so he can hear me over the music and laughter.

He puts his hand on my back and draws me against his chest. “I’ve always liked to write. Plus, I’m nosey as fuck.”

I laugh. “Wow, I think I picked the wrong course.”

“Event management sounds cool. You want to do weddings?”

And he loses a few points there. Why does everyone assume that? No one asks Reggie if he wants to plan weddings. I mean, I’d plan a royal or celebrity one because those things are huge.

“No, large corporate events. Things like festivals and sporting events.”

“Ah, cool.” He nods. “That’d be fun. You’d get to watch them for free.”

I’m not sure how much time you get to sit around when you’re literally in charge of making sure it all runs smoothly, but I nod along anyway.

The attraction hangs between us, but somehow it’s weaker now, fizzing away. I want to reach out and grab onto it because, damn, do I need to have some fun.

“Can I get you another drink?” he asks.

I lift my glass and see that it’s now empty. The world tilts sideways as I move a step forward like I’m at sea, and I stumble a little. Shit.

The way the world moves slowly makes me happy. It’s a calm, soothing feeling I know will be replaced with a raging headache in the morning. For now, I’m soaking it up.

“Whoa! Hey, are you okay?” he asks when I stumble sideways.

“Fucking hell, you’re a liability,” Casper growls from behind me. I gasp the moment he grabs my arm, holding me up like a toy. I look up in time to see him glaring at Josh. “You can fuck off now.”

Josh’s shocked gaze flits from Casper to me, his mouth forming an ‘O’ shape as if he’s never had to deal with this kind of confrontation before. I guess he hasn’t from the dark lord who has me pinned against his chest.

I feel Casper’s abs through his T-shirt.

Don’t think about those.

“Oh my God, Casper, stop being rude! Josh, ignore him—he has issues.Manyissues.” I push Casper back, wriggling out of his grasp. He lets me go. I’m not stupid enough to believe that I could get away if he didn’t allow it.

Bastard.

Casper pinches the bridge of his nose like he’s had enough of my shit already. How, I don’t know, because I’ve barely been near him tonight and haven’t seen him in hours. Plus, hecame over tome.

Josh backs up, palms in the air. “I don’t want any trouble.”

He’s not going to set the journalistic world on fire, is he?

I wave my hand, dismissing him as disappointment settles in my gut. “Bye.” Anyone who runs at the first sign of conflict isn’t worth my time. Josh shakes his head as he walks away, disappearing into the crowd.

Slowly, I turn to Casper. “What the hell was that?”

I push at his chest—wow, that really is hard—and I scowl.

“You’ve had too much to drink, and that guy was a sleaze. Where’s my thanks for doing you a favour?”

“Doing me a favour? I was having a conversation with a nice man who was interested in getting to know me. Maybe I wanted him to, did you ever think about that? No. Jesus, why are you here? Go find some poor, unsuspecting woman to sleep with tonight. I’m fine.”

I blink, seeing two of him for half a second.

What a scary thought.

“You’re drunk, Ainsley.”
