“Why are they? It’s more expensive going outside of term time. Is it the teaching thing?”

“Yeah, she can’t take time off, plus one of the friends they’re going with is also a teacher. It’s an adult only hotel, so they won’t have a bunch of kids running around. I’m so glad they’re going. They need a break.”

“We can FaceTime whenever you want, you know?”

“Freya, I really am fine. I don’t mind my own company.”

“I know, I just—”

“Feel sorry for me.”

“No… Well, a little. I’m sorry. You’re one of my best friends and I just want you to be happy. Is that so bad?”

“No, it’s not, but I’m not unhappy.” Sure, there are things in my life I wish I had but since I’m twenty-one, I’m not going to panic or rescue thirteen cats just yet.

“Good.” She sits down at the table, bringing a bowl of Doritos with her.

What a brilliant welcome home.

“Is this a serious talk?” I ask, following suit.

“No. I was talking to Casper today.”

“I’m sorry you had to go through that.”

She laughs and shakes her head. “Apart from being a bit intense, he’s not that bad. You two just clash. I think I’ve found the white flag, though. He said you have great ideas for his parents’ party.”

“He said that specifically aboutme? Maybe he meant me and Reggie. Heavy on the Reggie.”

“No.You.”

The churning thing in stomach my is back, and I don’t know if I want to hide or vomit. A compliment from Casper. That’s new.

“Wow, I really must be if he’s admitted that. I wonder how much it hurt him to say it.”

“See. He doesn’t hate you.”

“He doesn’t think I’m a shitty event planner. That doesn’t mean he’s ready to make daisy chains with me.”

“Daisy chains?”

“There was this girl in primary school. She was a real bitch to everyone. One day at lunch, she was being her miserable self, so I invited her to make daisy chains with me. She did, and for about ten minutes we were friends. It was a short truce. Casper will be back to hating me by now.”

“Maybe you could use this as an opportunity to end the feud once and for all.”

“Don’t hold your breath. I don’t even know why he’s so hostile, but we’ve never got along. You know this. All of his friends are rich and beautiful.”

“You’re beautiful.”

I turn my nose up. “I’m not rich. I can’t afford to go to the same clubs and restaurants as him. I can’t go on long weekends or ski over Christmas. I’m fine with that, Freya, but it means that Casper and I will never be friends. It’s no big loss really. It’s not like we’ll run in the same circles once uni is over.”

“You manage just fine with Reggie and Marvin.”

“Well, they don’t care if I have money.”

She tilts her head. “You think Casper does?”

“He was weird with me after freshers’ week. Suddenly, he wanted to go to the posh places to get drunk and not the uni bar. He’d had enough of slumming it. Come on, all the people he now hangs around with can afford the exclusive clubs and the hundred-pound bottles of champagne.”
