What he means is he wanted a party house and it’s harder to do that if you’re alone. They have people over a lot.

“Right, you like the social side. Particularly the women.”

“I’m single. I can fuck who like.”

I wince at his crass words, but I know there’s another reason why they piss me off. “Good for you.”

“When is your next meeting with my parents?” he asks, changing the subject.

“End of next week. Reggie will be back then.”

“It’s going well?”

“Yeah, I love it. I really do.”

“Convenient, since your degree is in event management.”

“I never thought I’d get a job like this so soon, though. Your mum said she would give me a glowing reference and recommend us if the event is a success.”

“Hmm.”

The server brings our drinks and takes our food order. Casper doesn’t look anywhere but at me while he picks up his drink and tells her he wants a quesadilla.

I take a few long gulps of my drink. We’re on a tightrope. One wrong move in the conversation and we could fall back to the start where we can’t get along for even a second.

“The alarm has been installed,” Casper says.

I don’t look away from him, either. I’m not sure if it’s a game, but I’m not taking the chance. “When did that happen?”

“Before I came to pick you up. I’ll show you how to use it. You should change the passcode from the preset.”

“Okay. You let them in?”

He nods. “You have a spare key.”

“Yeah, but it’s on the key hooks,” I tell him.

“No, it’s in my pocket.”

“Casper. You can’t just help yourself.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll leave it behind tomorrow morning, if you’d prefer?”

“Tomorrow morning?”

“After I leave. I’m in court most of the day.”

“After you leavewhere?”

“Your house. Keep up, Ainsley.”

Our dinner is brought over, ending the argument and the world’s most immature staring contest. I manage to mutter a thank you and not throw my burrito in Casper’s face.

Who the hell does he think he is?

We don’t talk as we tuck in. I try to figure something to say. He hasn’t even asked me if he could take a key to let the alarm people in. He hasn’t asked if he can stay over.

Yes, I wanted him to, but not like this.
