I watch him for a second while he’s distracted. Long, dark lashes and cheekbones you could ski off. Unfair.

“Would you like a photo?” he asks, still reading the menu.

I duck my head. Shit.

“No, thank you,” I reply, trying to not sound like I’ve been caught perving.

Even his laughter is a turn on.

“How was your lunch with that judge?” I ask, changing the subject.

“Long. But it’s a good connection.”

“Do you try to get them on your side?”

“It’s helpful to have strong relationships with the people I’ll be working alongside.”

“You should’ve gone into politics.”

He lowers the menu. “Ainsley, this is how it works. You can bet that every lawyer is doing the same thing as me. A jury will determine whether my clients are guilty or innocent.”

“And the judge could give them a more lenient sentence.”

“Do you believe there are no consequences for that?”

“I dunno. Depends on how rich you are.”

“Do you hate me because I come from rich parents?”

“I don’t hate you at all.”

That’s half true. Okay, not at all true. I don’t hate himthis second.

He frowns as if he’s trying to figure out if I’m telling the truth. “I wasn’t sure. Of course, I was confident while you were eye-fucking me. Anytime you want me to make you come, you only have to ask.”

I am never going to look at him again.

“That’s not what I was doing,” I protest, sounding like a guilty child.

Pitiful, Ainsley. Pitiful.

“If you say so.”

“Okay, the hate is coming back strong.”

“Ah, the equilibrium is restored.”

“You make me want to move to the other side of the planet, but I would never want anything bad to happen to you.”

His body freezes. “You would move?”

“I never understood why you moved next door to us.”

“Marvin wanted to be near Imani.”

“Well, yeah, that was my best guess. And you didn’t want to find somewhere on your own?”

He shrugs. “Not really. It’s uni, Ainsley.”
