“Do you want dessert?” he asks.

Hello, whiplash.

I clear my throat. “Does anyone come out to dinner and not get dessert?”

Laughing, he replies, “I’ve been on a few dates like that.”

“I hope you ditched them after.”

“Almost after.”

I scoff. “You mean after sex.”

“I already had to buy a dinner.”

“Casper…”

He laughs again. “What are you having?”

“Cheesecake, and no sex.”

“You’re only lying to yourself. Can we order dessert, please?” he asks a passing server.

I’m still not sure how I feel about him or what’s going on here, but there’s little I can do other than going with the flow. There’s also a whole load of intrigue. For someone who’s hated me for years, he’s sure being nice.

I try not to look into anything or find a reason for it, but it’s hard because my life, and the lives of the people Casper and I live with, would be much easier if we could find a way to get along. Maybe this is the start.

Once we’re done and my stomach has stretched three sizes like some Grinch-growth shit, Casper insists on paying.

“No,” I say when he takes his wallet from his pocket. “I can pay.”

“Ainsley, we’ll argue about this is in the car,” he says, holding his card over the card reader.

I seethe across the table when I hear the beep. It’s done—he’s paid. Sure, it’s nice to be bought dinner, but this isn’t a date, and I didn’t expect him to buy me anything.

“I can pay,” I repeat.

“You’ve made that clear.”

He stands up, and I debate staying here. I reckon I could force another taco in and go again if they made me order. But it’s raining now, and we’re farther from home than we were at uni.

Reluctantly, I follow him out of the restaurant.

“Thank you for dinner.”

He smirks over his shoulder. “That wasn’t so hard, was it?”

“Why do you have to ruin things? You couldn’t have just said you’re welcome?”

“You should’ve had a third cocktail.”

“Fuck you,” I say, getting into his car and closing the door a little harder than necessary.

“Do you think that bothers me? Set the car on fire if you like.”

I don’t think it bothers him. In fact, I think he’s rather enjoying this. I don’t think he would care if I actually set fire to this penis enlargement.

“You don’t like your car?”
