“I love my car.”

“Right. You’ll just buy a new one.”

“Not where I was going with that, but sure.”

“You might as well talk in riddles.”

He ignores me for the rest of the journey. It’s welcomed, to be honest. We’re going around and around in the most ridiculous display of immaturity.

My ‘make friends’ plan feels like an impossibility sometimes.

Casper parks in my drive again, despite the fact that the loose bricks wouldn’t do a single thing to his car. I can set it alight, but he can’t park on a wonky brick. Where’s the logic?

I let us into my house, and he punches in the alarm code.

“Let me show you how to arm this, then I’ll go home and get a few things I need for the night.”

“Bag of blood? A coffin? Rohypnol?”

“I wouldn’t need to drug you, Ainsley.”

“If you wanted to sleep with me, you would.”

“I bet you one million pounds that I would not.”

What the actual…?

He has a million pounds?

“What?” he asks.

I shake my head, feeling dizzy. “Nothing. Show me how this works.”

He doesn’t. Instead, he takes a step closer and completely invades my personal space. I’ve lost count of the number of times he’s done this recently.

“You are sexy as fuck when you’re trying to be angry at me.”

My traitorous pulse quickens as his aftershave fills my lungs. I want to burrow under his skin. “I don’t need to try.”

He smiles. “Sometimes I think you believe that.”

“How does the alarm work?”

“One million. I’m that confident.”

“You weren’t that confident when I didn’t sleep with you during freshers’ week.”

His eyes narrow, and I know I’ve hit a sore spot. Someone doesn’t like being reminded of their failures.

But he’s not accepting that fail. He takes my hand, stretching his fingers along mine. His strong touch is warm, sending electricity through my body and zapping my heart into a sprint.

I’m certain my brain implodes.

“What’re you doing?” I mutter like a moron, every nerve ending sizzling beneath my skin.

Moving our hands, he points our joined index fingers towards the alarm panel.

“Touching this icon is how you arm the system. The one next to it is the one you’ll use while you’re home. It won’t set off any sensors.”
