Casper smirks. “Take a breath. I slept fine.”

I make the drinks and sit at the kitchen table. I have my planner here, along with a printed mood board. Most people on my course keep theirs on Pinterest. I like something physical. All my notes are scribbled down, and it drives Reggie crazy.

“This everything?” Casper asks sarcastically.

He sits down next to me at the table. I wish he would’ve gone to the opposite side. This is a bit too close while also not remotely close enough. I can smell his skin and it’s maddening.

“I know there’s a lot, but this is a big event.”

He flips the pages of my mood board without asking if he can see it. Not that I expected him to ask permission.

“What do you think?” I ask.

“I can’t believe you got my parents to agree to this. A circus. I’ve only ever seen them throw events with caviar and fish so expensive, it should be illegal to kill them. Now they’re serving their friends mini hot dogs.” He laughs, shaking his head. “You’re a magician.”

“Well, the meat for those hot dogs should be illegal, too. Those pigs must be made of gold.”

“Will you be there?” he asks.

“Yes, I need to make sure everything runs smoothly. I already have anxiety over it, and I have two months to go. Will you be there? Making connections and complaining about the food to drive me insane.”

He nudges my arm with his own. “My parents would kill me if I missed it. And you’re not serving awful fish, so it won’t be the food I complain about.”

“I’m sure you’ll find something.”

“I’m sure I will.”

“Arsehole.”

“You’ve called me that so many times over the years, at one point I thought that’s what you believed my name was.”

“Can you blame me?”

“Do you only blame me?”

I think for a second, wanting to tell him that I do, but it would be a lie. He can’t argue with himself. “I’m not innocent, but it was absolutely you who started this feud.”

The front door opens, and I almost leap into Casper’s lap.

“Ainsley, what the fuck is this about us being broken into, and why the fuck is there a Waitrose van outside the house? Are we rich now?”

Gasping, I turn to Casper. “You told Imani?”

He shrugs as if he doesn’t care that he’s broken a promise and ruined her family break.

“You agreed not to tell anyone until they were back,” I hiss.

“Calm down.”

“Don’ttell me to calm down.”

Imani reaches the kitchen and throws her hands up. “You were in the house! Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” I tell her quickly before turning my attention back to the traitor at the table. “Why would you do that?”

“They have a right to know.”

“They. So, it’s not just Imani you told.”
