That pissed me off, and the fact that it pissed me off… pissed me off more. What was she doing to me?

The machine buzzed as it worked with the blood. It would spit out the results soon.

A moment later, data showed up on the screen. The other vampire turned to the screen and studied it.

“What does it say?” Liv asked, stepping closer.

“Oh, it’s inconclusive,” the vampire answered, and turned the screen away from her.

“That doesn’t make any sense,” she said. “Are you sure? Let me see.” She took a step closer, but the vampire refused to let her see the screen. His eyes darkened the closer she came, and his fangs elongated.

I grabbed him by the collar and jerked him back.

“Do you have to be so rough?” Liv demanded. “God, you’re like an animal.”

Oh, she had no idea.

My eyes flitted over the data on the screen, landing on the results.

Shit.

Liv screamed from behind me, and when I turned, the vampire was on her, fangs elongated, eyes black with hunger. He wasn’t even trying to hide what he was. He rode her to the ground as she fell backward and dove for her neck.

I yanked him off before he could pierce her skin, and with one swift movement, I ripped his throat out.

The vampire fell lifelessly to the ground. Blood poured out of his throat, painting the lab a bright red.

Liv stared at the vampire on the floor, the fangs still out, lifeless black eyes staring at the ceiling.

“What…” She swallowed hard.

She was pale as a ghost, and no wonder. She’d just seen me kill a vampire.

The door opened, and the other vampire returned with coffee in his hand. He looked at his dead buddy on the floor before he frowned and looked up at me.

“Get the fuck out of here,” I growled.

Instead of leaving, the vampire stepped closer.

Shit, if he saw the results, he would know what I’d seen. He would know why his buddy was dead, and if he couldn’t control himself—which I doubted he could—he would end up dead, too.

The whole building was riddled with vampires. It would only be a matter of time before word spread, and they would come after Liv.

I had to get her out of here. I had to do it without anyone knowing who and what she was.

I worked fast. Before the vampire coming in could think twice, I spun around and jammed my hand into the heart of the machine, yanking out the motherboard. I didn’t have time to think of anything else.

“Hey!” the vampire shouted when I threw the motherboard down and stomped on it. No way to fix it now. We’d have to get a new one, and a new case, but that would be easy enough.

With that taken care of, I took one big step toward Liv and grabbed her. She screamed, but before she could fight me—which I didn’t doubt she would do—I twisted the ring on my finger, and we slipped away into nothingness.

LIV

No, no, no, no, no.

When my feet touched solid ground again, my hands covered my face, and I trembled, struggling to breathe.
