Instead, she smiled brightly.

“I’m here to look out for you while Colter is busy, so you can come to me with anything. Any questions, anything you need, or just if you need a friendly face and a shoulder to cry on.”

“Nice of you to offer your friendship,” I said.

Rory nodded.

“Did he ask you to tell me that?”

Rory’s smile faded a little. “You’re hostile, and I totally get why you would be. Just remember that right now, Colter and his few close confidants are the only people you can trust, so try not to be too prickly about it. You don’t want to bite the hand that feeds you.”

“Or imprisons me.”

Her smile broadened a little, but it didn’t reach her eyes. Was she getting irritated with me? Well, she had no right. She wasn’t the one being held captive somewhere because of some results and some crazy enchanted shit that she’d never heard before, that could or could not be true.

“I’m going to wash up for dinner. Colter is hosting us all here tonight. I’ll see you later,” she said and drained her coffee cup. She left me sitting alone at the breakfast nook, feeling more railroaded than I’d felt before.

I finished my coffee, washed up, and refreshed myself a little before dinner, and finally made my way to the formal dining room Colter had in his apartment. I hadn’t had time to really explore the apartment, but it really was more like a mansion in a high-rise building. There was nothingapartment-like about this place.

Before I walked into the dining room, I heard voices. I stopped at the door, waiting to hear who was all present. I felt out of my depth here, and knowing I would be surrounded by shifters when I was just human was unsettling.

“Is the situation handled?” I heard a familiar voice say. It wasn’t Colter, though.

Mykel, perhaps. It sounded like the gruff right-hand man with the shaggy stubble.

“You can’t afford anyone finding out about her.”

“Why do you think she’s here?” There was no doubting the sound of Colter’s voice.

“You better shut Jerry up,” Mykel said again. “Fuck knows what he’ll do with this information.”

“He’s known about her all along,” Colter said.

“What? How do you know?”

“A vampire like him doesn’t take shit like his lab assistant being killed lightly without knowing there was a reason, and Jerry didn’t bat an eye when I talked to him about it.”

My stomach twisted and turned. Jerry was a vampire? He’d known all along I wasdifferent?

“He better stay in line, or else—”

“I’ll take care of it,” another voice chimed in. Lazlo, I was sure. “If he steps out of line, I’ll handle him. Don’t you worry about it.”

Rory had said Lazlo was a vampire, too, so I guess that would have made sense. It was still hard to believe that they were all some kind of crazy beings.

Enchanted.

Like witches and fairies? I’d asked in the meeting.

They must have thought I was a fool.

I cleared my throat and stepped into the room, making my presence known.

“Ah, there you are,” Colter said, his green eyes resting on me. “Come, sit.”

I walked to the chair he’d pulled out to me. He was being a gentleman, but it had been a command, and I didn’t like being told what to do. I was drawn to Colter, but he irritated me with his arrogance, acting like he was everything.

But at this moment, I guess hewaseverything. It sounded like I wasn’t going back to my old life anytime soon.
