“That doesn’t make sense,” I responded. “Jerry knew how important this project was to me. I think he was just telling you that to paint a bad picture of me.”

“So why didn’t your dad put more effort into making this work if he put so many resources into protecting it?”

“He died before he finished the project. And I didn’t care about any of this before. I shut that door when he died, and I haven’t looked at the project again until recently. A lot has changed since then.”

Liv eyed me. “Okay… the spell is on the machine to keep it safe from… what?”

“People abusing it,” I said.

“But… you still want to remove it?”

“I don’t know what power whoever is behind this has. I don’t want to take the chance.”

Liv nodded slowly, although I wasn’t sure she understood.

“So, how do you break the spell?” Rory asked.

“Enchanted blood.”

“The same blood that it’s supposed to test?”

I shook my head. “No, no, not just any enchanted blood. The spell is more complicated than that. My dad made sure of it.”

Rory frowned. “Why didn’t I know about this?”

I shrugged. “Some things don’t matter too much, you know?”

Rory didn’t look happy, but that was fine. I hadn’t told her because it had been a woman my dad had known. I didn’t want anything to do with my dad or the woman he’d chosen to replace my mom, and talking about it hurt like a bitch, so I didn’t.

It was as simple as that.

“So, without that soothsayer, you can’t break the spell,” Rory mused. “Can’t you find someone else like her?”

“What about me?” Liv asked, speaking up.

We both looked at her.

“What about you?” I asked.

Liv looked hurt by that statement, but she pushed on.

“My blood is a big deal, isn’t it? All of this is because of my blood. Will my blood work to break this spell?”

I blinked at her.

“The systems will pick up if we just walk in here and take it,” I said. “I don’t want a bunch of vampires on my hands because we’re doing the one thing this machine is safeguarded against.”

“I could get us in there without anyone being alerted that we’re taking it. I have pretty high security clearance,” Liv responded.

“No,” I said. “Absolutely not.”

“Why?” Liv asked. “Isn’t that what you’re worried about, that someone else might beat you to it? It doesn’t takeallmy blood to break the spell, does it?”

“Let her do it,” Rory suggested.

It was too dangerous to take her out of the penthouse again. The last time I’d been stupid enough to do it, that fucking demon had nearly killed her. I wasn’t going to allow anything to happen to her again. Even if it was likely that her blood could break the spell.

Why do you care so much?
