Why do you care at all?

I pushed the thoughts away. I would do introspection about why I cared another time. Right now, the fact was that for some reason, Ididcare.

“We’re not using you to do this,” I said again.

“What are you training me for, then?” Liv challenged. “You want me to be ready, but there’s nothing to be ready for.”

Rory glanced at me. “Maybe it’s not such a bad idea.”

“Are you kidding me?” I asked. “It’s a terrible idea!”

“It doesn’t have to be a big thing, Colter,” Rory said. “In and out, get the machine, make sure it’s safe, and that’s it.”

I sighed and glanced at Liv, who looked at me with hope in her eyes.

“I have nothing going for me right now,” she said. “I want to help. I have to have some kind of purpose. I can’t just be a prisoner for the rest of my life.”

Fuck, I hated it when she referred to herself as a prisoner. It wasn’t what she was at all. I just wanted to ensure she was safe until we could figure out what the hell was going on.

I shook my head.

“I’m not risking your life on something stupid.”

“It’s not something stupid!” Liv cried out. “That machine will save thousands of lives, if not more. There’s nothing stupid about that.”

I shook my head again. “It’s not going to happen.”

“Come on, Colt—” Rory stared, but I silenced her with a glare.

“I’m still alpha around here, and I still own that company. If I say no, it meansno.”

Rory closed her mouth and clenched her jaw before she stood.

“You know what? You’re right. You are alpha. I made the mistake of thinking you could be reasoned with.”

“Everyone has their flaws,” I clapped back.

Rory glared at me, but she didn’t respond. Instead, she looked at Liv.

“Good night. I’ll see you again tomorrow, or sometime soon. Good luck with him.”

She looked at me one last time before she left the dining room, and Liv and I were left alone in awkward silence.

I stood.

“I’m going to call it a night, too.”

When Colter stood from the table, I stared at him.

“Oh, no, you don’t get to walk away from this like you have the final say.”

Colter bristled. I could almost feel his anger crackling in the air. I was more and more aware of magic these days, now that I knew what I was looking for and what it felt like.

Colter’s emotions all had a certain feeling to them.
