He dropped himself on a bench and waved his hand.

“Carry on, let’s see what she’s got.”

He talked about me like I wasn’t there. I bristled. I hated being treated like I didn’t matter, especially now that I had so much more going for me. I wasn’t a human, out of place in an enchanted world. I was one of them, and rightfully so.

“You’re not joining us?” I asked.

“Look, sweetheart, I know your training is everything to you right now, but I have bigger shit to deal with than training.”

“Like what?” Lazlo asked.

“Did I mumble at the part where I said it was none of your business? Fuck, it’s like a broken record in here.”

“You’re such a dick when you want to be, you know that?” Lazlo said.

“Thanks, fangs. Let’s point out the obvious.”

Lazlo and Mykel stared at each other, and tension grew in the gym. Something was up. Mykel wasn’t usually this hostile, but right now, it looked like they were ready to take each other on.

Mykel jumped up, and for a moment, it looked like he was ready to attack. He shook his head instead.

“I’m not doing this. I don’t have to sit here and deal with this shit. This isn’t my problem.” He turned around and stormed out of the studio again, leaving us behind, confused.

“What the hell got into him?” Lazlo asked.

“He’s not usually like this, from what I’ve seen,” I said.

Lazlo blinked slowly, trying to process the information. “No, he’s not. He’s also not one to keep secrets about where he is and what he’s doing.” Lazlo shook himself as if he could physically shake it off, and he turned to face me again. “Let’s get back to it. You’re almost done, but I want to run over that last one again.”

I nodded, and we fell back into our training.

When the training was finished, I went back to the penthouse to shower. I stood under the hot water, letting it run over my aching muscles. In my mind, I ran over the things Lazlo had shown me again, going over the stances, the facts, themagicI could use now. I still had a way to go, but I was learning how to use my magic, and I felt more empowered than ever before.

When I got out of the shower, I heard movement in the house. When I walked to the front room, Rory was on the couch, a glass of wine in her hand and a book on her lap.

“Hi,” I said.

She looked up and smiled. “I heard good things about your trip to the island.”

“You have no idea.”

“I’m so glad you found some answers.”

I nodded and sat down on the couch, making myself comfortable. I ran my hand through my damp hair.

“How have things been here?” I asked.

“They’ve been okay…” Rory hesitated. “I don’t know if I should tell you this, but I think you should know, since you’re involved now.”

I frowned. What was she talking about?

“Someone is actively trying to sabotage what Colter is doing. We had two different reports from the lab that data is disappearing after they’re doing research about the cure and the machine.”

“Really?” I asked. “I thought now that the machine was out of there, it’s okay.”

“It’s bigger than that,” Rory said. “I’m here with a report for Colter to look at, but the nature of the things that are happening makes me think it’s someone very close to the project with a lot of access.”

“Someone like Jerry?” I asked. He had a lot of access as far as I knew—Colter had asked us to work on the project together, after all.
