“Lazlo?” I asked in a quiet voice.

“Yeah,” Mykel said.

I waited for him to say, “I told you so.” Mykel had been against the idea of having Lazlo on the team from the start. He’d told me it would never work, and it turned out he’d been right. Thankfully, he didn’t gloat about being right.

Instead, he said, “I think I know where to find her.”

“Where?” I asked. “How?”

“Lazlo was sneaking around behind our backs, so I started digging into what he was doing. I went behind his back when he went behind ours. When he was busy training Liv the other morning, I went out to follow the trail he’d left behind the night before. It took a bit of work—dark magic is fucking hard to follow if you’re not a creature of the Underworld—but I found the warehouse where he’s been putting up shop.”

I stared at Mykel. “Why didn’t you tell me any of this?”

“You wouldn’t have believed me,” Mykel said simply. “So, I made sure I found proof before I came to you with this. I can’t prove much right now, but I figured it’s a good time to come clean.”

I stared at my beta. He’d been sneaking around behind my back, and Liv had warned me about it, but it hadn’t been for the reasons she’d thought. I hadn’t believed her, but she hadn’t been wrong that someone close to me was going behind my back.

She’s just been wrong about who it was.

“Where is she?” I demanded. The rest we could take care of once Liv was safe.

“The warehouse is in the industrial district, but it’s hexed to shit, so you won’t just find it. You’ll have to follow the darkness.”

“I need you to gather the troops,” I said to Mykel. “I’m going in there to get her, but if the vampires are conspiring against me, we’re going to war. I’m taking care of this shit once and for all.”

“On it,” Mykel said, and he disappeared.

Rory frowned, worried. “You’re going to war?”

“If they want to fuck with me, I’ll give them what they’re asking for.” I walked to the door.

“You’re going after her alone?”

“I don’t have time to wait for the others before I storm the castle. If they have her, she’s in deep shit, and I need to get to her as quickly as I can. You can come with me, or you can wait for the others.”

Rory hesitated before she nodded and followed me. “I’ll come.”

“It will be dangerous.”

Rory snorted. “I’ve known you for how long? I’m always in danger.”

I grinned at that.

As soon as we were outside the building, I shifted into my dragon form. Transitioning to my beast, I let out a shriek before I flapped my powerful wings and lifted my body into the air.

I looked around, but I wasn’t looking to see what I could find with my eyes. I needed to find the trail of dark magic Mykel had talked about.

In dragon form, it was easier to pick up on magic, and I was the alpha of the city. I could do this. I could…

Dark magic was everywhere. Not just one trail, but thousands of them, crisscrossing the city.

Shit.

Had the vampires known I would try to find them and created a diversion? I couldn’t follow every trail. It would be too much, take too much time.

Maybe that had been their point.

I lowered myself to the ground again and shifted back into human form.
