“I can’t do this,” I said. “How am I supposed to find her?”

“You’re focusing on the wrong thing,” Rory said. “You’re not looking for darkness, are you? That’s not Liv.”

I stared at Rory and finally understood what she was saying.

Liv was light. She was an angel, and her magic would only leave one trail, since she was the only angel on Earth.

“You’re a saint,” I said to Rory and shifted again.

This time, I didn’t focus on the dark magic all around us. Instead, I turned my focus inward to the love I had for Liv, to the light she’d brought into my life.

At first, the trail was dim. I could barely see it through all the darkness that swirled it he streets, but the more I focused on the light that Liv was, the more I could see the line where she’d traveled. It turned into a glowing trail, and in the distance, her power shone like a beacon.

I flapped my wings, heading in the direction of the light.

Beneath me, Rory shifted into her wolf form, and she ran below me through the streets, following my lead.

The industrial area was busy with factories doing what they did, pumping black, billowing smoke into the air. I flew past factory upon factory, all with darkness clinging to the walls. It was clear now that the vampires had tried to throw me off the trail by coating everything in dark magic, but Liv’s beacon drew me, and I saw nothing else.

When I reached the large warehouse where her light shone from, I dropped to the ground silently in human form.

Rory ran into the lot a moment later and shifted next to me.

“What’s the plan?” she asked.

“I’m going in there to get her. Flank the back, so we have an element of surprise on our side. I don’t know how many are in there.”

Rory nodded and shifted again. She was a lithe, brown wolf, and she was gone in a flash to do my bidding.

I walked to the front door of the warehouse. I wasn’t going to sneak in, I would announce myself from the get-go.

“I was wondering when you would arrive,” Lazlo said, looking up when I walked in.

I took in the sight in front of me—Liv hooked up to a machine, blood running into tubes. She looked pale and worn out, with dark circles under her eyes.

“Colter?” she asked in a thin voice.

I wanted to go to her. My heart shattered at the idea that she was in so much pain, but I kept my shit together.

“Nice try, fucking with magic like that.”

“Yeah, well, I thought I’d make it fun. You figured it out quicker than I thought you might. I was hoping she’d be dead by the time you got here.”

“She can’t die, she’s half angel.”

“Yeah, which means she’s not pure. She was born of an angel and a fae. Isn’t that what you told me? They don’t have the same luxuries as true angels who were created from their good deeds.”

He was right. There were loopholes for fucking everything.

Andra had told me that Liv would live as long as other enchanted beings did. I’d been so happy, then, knowing I wouldn’t lose her as soon as we lost the humans, but it also meant that Liv wasn’t immortal. She had the lifespan of her fae side of the family, not her angel side, and she could die just like I could. Old age was postponed for us, but murder…

“I’ll make a deal with you,” I said calmly to Lazlo, even though my insides were buzzing with fury. I wanted nothing more than to lose my shit and destroy this whole operation in a fit of rage.

“A deal?” Lazlo asked with a frown.

“Don’t, Colter,” Liv said. “It’s a trap. Whatever it is…”

I held up my hand. Her voice was so thin, she sounded like she was going to pass out at any moment.
