“Here,” I said, handing it to Mykel.

I put another cup in the machine and went through the same motions to make myself some coffee, too.

“Tell me what’s going on,” Mykel said. “Maybe I can help.”

I shook my head. “There’s not much to do to help. I can’t just walk in here and make demands, you know. Turk’s family is a lot higher up than we thought, so it’s not so easy to get information. They all know him or know who he is, and they’re not too worried about him missing, which makes me wonder exactly what ‘missing’ means.”

Mykel frowned. “What do you mean?”

I shrugged. “I thought he was getting away from his parents, and he was missing because of something like that, but the more I find out, the more I think I might be wrong.”

Mykel snorted. “A woman who thinks she’s wrong?”

“Don’t be a dick,” I said.

Mykel chuckled, folding his arms over his chest.

“Bishop is already pissed off about me being in his territory,” I said. That was aside from the fact that I’d challenged him and told him I’d do whatever I wanted. That hadn’t been the best move, but damn if I was going to admit to that. To him, or anyone else. “If you get involved, too, shit’s going to hit the fan, and then he’s really going to clam up.

Mykel unfolded his arms. “Makes sense.”

“I’m suspicious the same way you are, though. I’ll figure it out. Bishop looks like he knows something, but he’s tight-lipped, too. He’s eager to get me out of here, which makes me think I should stick around a while and figure out why.”

“Colter mentioned you got tangled up with the alpha.”

I rolled my eyes and took the finished cup of coffee from the machine, adding sugar before I sipped the black coffee.

“I’m nottangledupwith him. I did run into him a couple of times, though, and he was weird when I mentioned Turk.”

“You know he’s dangerous, right?”

I glanced at Mykel. “Why?”

“Aside from the fact that he’s a powerful shifter?”

“We’re all powerful shifters,” I countered.

Mykel chuckled. “Yeah, we’re pretty high up there.” He gestured for me to follow him to the living room, and I sat down in my usual spot on the couch. I tugged a furry blanket over me, kicked off my shoes, and tucked my feet underneath me. I blew on my coffee and took another sip.

“He’s dangerous because he’s heartless,” Mykel said.

“Heartless?”

“Yeah, he doesn’t give a shit about anyone or anything. He’s very serious about himself and only himself, and he doesn’t care what happens to others. It’s almost like he relishes in their destruction. In fact, if he can be the one to nudge them toward that destruction, all the better.”

I frowned. Was that the reputation he had?

“He’s nothing like that, though,” I said.

Mykel studied me with a blank expression.

“How involved are you with him?”

“Not at all,” I said quickly. “I just don’t see a malicious man when I look at him.” I thought about his expression when he’d stared at me in the bar, as if he saw something, a ghost from his past. His expression had been so raw…

“Was he always like that?” I asked. “Maybe it’s just an act to stay in power.”

Mykel shook his head. “No, it’s not just an act. I’ve only heard rumors, but the story goes, he was serious about a wolf shifter, and they were a power couple. It was before his dad—the last alpha around here—had stepped down. The girl was a sweet thing, apparently loved by everyone who knew her.”
