“What happened to her?” I asked.

“She was killed in a brutal territory war when Bishop’s dad wanted to expand.”

“He wanted more than just the Twin Cities area?”

“He wanted the state, and he was pretty close to getting it, too.”

I shook my head.

“Bishop was ready to lay down his life to save her, but his dad had used her as a pawn, a business move gone sour in the end, and Bishop was too late getting to her. The magic they’d used to pull her over was dark magic, and Bishop couldn’t fight it. She slipped right through his fingers and died in his arms, and there wasn’t a thing he could do about it.”

“Oh.” I pressed my fingers against my lips. “That’s awful.”

“Yeah, pretty fucked up.”

“What happened to Bishop’s dad? Why did he step down?” I’d never really cared about stuff like this. Mykel was Colter’s beta, and Colter had always been the next in line to take over as alpha, so it made sense that they’d all known about it.

“I don’t know that part. All I know is that he didn’t step down. He died.”

“Oh, shit,” I said.

I shook my head. It was a lot to have to go through. It made sense why Bishop was so closed off and suspicious.

“I can’t imagine what he had to go through.” I thought yet again about the man I saw underneath his facade, the human underneath the monster.

When I finally looked up, Mykel was watching me.

“What?” I asked.

“You can’t get involved with him.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, thanks for that. I’mnotinvolved with him, and I’m not planning to be, either. I’m just here to do a job before I go back home.”

“I’m serious, Rory,” Mykel said.

“So am I! What the hell is your problem?”

Mykel held up his hands. “I’m just saying, you can have sympathy for a man without trying to heal him.”

I snorted. “I’m a doctor, not a therapist.”

“No, but you have a way of trying to fix anything that’s broken. You don’t always have to save everyone.”

“Trust me, Bishop doesn’t need saving. He can fend for himself just fine. I don’t know why you keep saying the same thing.”

Mykel shrugged. “You have a habit of taking in charity cases.”

I gasped. “Excuse me?”

“I’m just saying, keep your eye on the prize.”

I stared at my brother.

“Why does everyone think I’ll mess this up?”

“Who said that?”

“You’re here, aren’t you? Colter sent you after he lectured me, too.”
