Mykel shook his head. “We’re just looking out for you.”

“Yeah?” I narrowed my eyes at my brother. “Well, don’t.”

Mykel unlocked his ankles and stood. He stretched until his back popped before he looked at his watch.

“I have to go.”

“Where?”

“Home. I have a flight back in about three hours.”

I shook my head, confused. “You just flew in for the day?”

“Yeah, I told you I just wanted to make sure you’re okay, and from the sound of things, you can handle it just fine, so there’s no reason for me to stay. Colter needs me, anyway.”

“Okay,” I said. I felt a little shaken that Mykel was leaving again so soon, but it was a testament to his and Colter’s faith in me.

I walked with him to the front door, and Mykel hugged me.

“Look after yourself, okay? If you need anything, we’ll be here in a blink.”

“I’ll be fine. Send Colter and Liv my love.”

“Will do.” I watched him walk to the rental car. He got in, waved at me, and drove off.

I sighed when I shut the door. I was more homesick now than before. I had to figure out what was going on so I could wrap this up and be done with it, and to do that, I had to start asking active questions.

I shut the door and walked to the kitchen to find something to eat for dinner.

Elaine was the first person I could ask about Turk, since she knew him and had made a point of saying so. As soon as I knew who I could ask next, that was what I would do.

Somehow, I would find him, especially if Bishop said he wasn’t missing in the first place. Was he in danger? Or was headanger? The sooner I could get to the bottom of this, the better.

RORY

It took me three days to figure out who to talk to and find them to chat about Turk. Every person I’d talked to knew him, but no one seemed to have seen him recently, and they didn’t know where he was.

I learned a lot about him that I might not have known otherwise. Like the fact that he had a weird relationship with his dad, always trying to get Dario’s approval, and it didn’t work; that he’d tried to start a couple of different businesses with his father’s money and had failed; and that everyone hated the kind of company he kept.

None of it helped me figure out what was going on. It felt like I was just going in circles, not knowing which way was up anymore. I began to question why I was even here. Our pack looked out for each other, and after Turk pledged his loyalty, we considered him part of our pack. Of course, if he wanted to leave, we would have never stopped him, but what if something had happened to him? Colter had thought that Turk possibly might be trying to start a turf war, but it really just seemed like Turk was a lost soul trying to find his way.

Still, I had a mission to find out why he was missing, and I wouldn’t let Colter down.

I worked the night shift for the week, too, which meant I had the day to find people and talk to them. I tried to balance it out with my sleeping schedule, but after the week, I was dead on my feet.

“I’m so ready to get back into a daytime routine,” I told Elaine one morning. “Being awake all night is overrated.”

“I prefer the night shift,” she said, tying her dark hair into a bun. “It leaves the day to relax, and all the boring cases go to the others. We just get the trauma cases, then, and that’s where I really feel like I’m saving lives, you know?”

That part was true—working in the emergency room was very different from dealing with everyday consultations. Still, I preferred a more normal routine.

“I’ll see you after the weekend,” I said when we reached our cars. We had two days off to get back into a daytime routine, and then our shift started bright and early on Monday morning.

“Let me know about going out tomorrow,” Elaine said. “The offer still stands.”

I promised that I would at least think about it. The idea of going out when I was so tired didn’t work for me, but maybe tomorrow I would feel different.
