I’d told her she could, in fact, because I wanted her around. When I was with her, I felt complete. I’d always felt like a part of me was missing, but with her…

Whatever. I shoved the thoughts away and focused on the meeting so it could distract me. I didn’t like that Rory challenged my alphahood.

I didn’t like that I felt like more of an alpha with her than I ever had.

“Ah, there you are,” Dario said to someone behind me, and when I turned, Turk walked into the room. His long hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and he wore a button-up with sneakers.

“Turk,” I said, surprised to see him. “I didn’t realize you were going to join us today.” I’d thought he was out of town or lying low after getting into trouble or something.

“Dad said it was important,” Turk said and walked behind the bar, grabbing a beer from the fridge.

“It is. It is,” Dario said.

He gestured toward the large Chesterfield couches that formed an intimate circle around a fireplace next to the bar, and the three of us sat down.

“Where have you been?” I asked Turk. After he’d come back from New York, reporting that the vampires had been taken care of and wouldn’t be a part of the new order of things as Colter had initially planned, he’d disappeared again.

“Oh, you know, I’ve been around.” Turk took a sip of his beer.

It wasn’t a very direct answer, but Turk was a snot-nosed kid who’d been spoiled rotten, and he figured himself important just because his dad was.

“So, let’s get down to business,” Dario said. “We discussed the terms of the deal the last time we were together.”

“Indeed. I’ve been thinking about it, and I think Elaine Knox will be a good fit.”

“Who?” Turk asked with a frown, scratching his cheek.

“She’s one of the few bear shifters in town, which makes her magic unique. She’s also a good person. It will be a good match.”

Turk narrowed his eyes. “Is she hot?”

I fought the urge to roll my eyes. “She’s easy on the eyes.”

Turk snorted. “That’s a roundabout way of saying no.”

I glanced at Dario, who watched our exchange with amusement.

“I don’t think I want to be with someone who’s just average, you know?” Turk said.

“She’s pretty, Turk,” I responded. Elaine was really pretty, and for most shifters, would be quite the catch.

“Not her,” he said.

I shook my head. “Who else did you have in mind, then?”

“I want someone more powerful. Someone who can stand on their own two feet but also add to my power, you know?”

It was sound in theory, although Turk himself didn’t have much power to speak of. I hadn’t ever felt him do great things with his magic. He was very subdued. His ego and arrogance were far more noticeable than his power as a shifter.

I tried to think who else in my pack I could suggest. A lot of the more powerful shifters in town were already mated.

“I want Rory,” Turk said.

I froze. “What?”

“You know, the doctor who’s been running around town. She’s hot, and she’s powerful, too. I saw her a couple of times in New York. Now,that’sa prize.”

I shook my head. My wolf was awake and growling. I forced myself to stay calm, but my skin was on fire, and blood rushed to my ears.
