“Rory isn’t a part of our pack,” I said tightly.

“She could be.”

“She’s not under my command,” I tried again.

“Come now,” Dario interjected. “I’m sure that’s something we can iron out very quickly. We have more than enough resources to fix that, don’t we?”

I glared at Dario. My control over my emotions was slipping. Magic spilled out of me, filling the room.

Dario frowned slightly.

“What’s this?”

“Rory isn’t an option,” I bit out, my voice more of a growl than anything else. “She isn’t a part of the dating pool.”

“It’s not such a big deal,” Turk said. “If she’s not a part of our pack, it shouldn’t matter to you, anyway.”

“What makes you think she’ll go for it?” I snapped.

Dario raised his eyebrows. “Are you suggesting Turk won’t be a good match to whoever he chooses as a mate?”

“Not to her,” I growled.

Turk stood, and he pushed magic at me. Was that a challenge?

I jumped to my feet, too.

A direct challenge to the alpha would turn into a fight to the death. It wasn’t something anyone just did, challenging the alpha on his own turf, questioning his authority, but Turk seemed to think he could do whatever he wanted just because of who his dad was.

I wanted to grab that asshole around the neck. I wanted to chew his face off.

I wanted to do a hell of a lot of damage to him for so much asthinkingabout Rory, let alone suggesting that they mate.

What the fuck?!

Dario stood and put a hand on Turk’s shoulder, but he looked at me. “I think we should talk about this some other time, when emotions don’t run so high. Clearly, we’ve struck a nerve, and we need time to calm down.”

I balled my hands into fists. Maybe that was a good idea, because I was on the verge of doing real damage to our relationship.

“We don’t need time to calm down,” I snapped. “I said no.”

Dario narrowed his eyes, but he couldn’t argue with me. I was the alpha, and my word was law. The atmosphere shifted in the room, and I felt him withdraw from me.

Shit. I needed the spell. I needed the power, and I couldn’t lose this business relationship over a disagreement. Besides, Dario was part of my inner circle. Surely he would see reason.

“I’ll find you a better match,” I offered.

Turk looked irritated. He bounced his one leg and ran his hands through his hair. Dario looked calm and put together. He wasn’t nearly as worked up over this as Turk and I were.

“Right, well, thank you for coming to see us,” Dario said, walking toward me. He put his hand on my shoulder and walked with me to the front door. Turk didn’t follow us, which meant we were alone by the time I stood at the car that waited for me.

“I understand my son’s behavior was a shock, and you should forgive Turk for his misgivings. He’s young, and he still has a lot to learn. I’ll let him understand the true meaning of challenging an alpha like that, and I assure you, it won’t happen again.”

“It better not,” I said. “Next time, I won’t hold back.”

“Yeah, yeah, it won’t go that far. Don’t worry. Like I said, we’ll give it a couple of days, and then we’ll talk again. I’m sure we can come to some kind of agreement where we all get what we want.”

I shook Dario’s hand when he extended it to me.
