Another thought jarred me—Bishop was terrified of dark magic and what it had done to him in the past. He was set on keeping his pack safe, but it had all been right under his nose all this time.

Dario and his “fae” with her spell… I shivered at the thought. What if she wasn’t only fae, the same way Turk wasn’t only a shifter?

Turk laughed, and the sound was horrible. It sounded like nails on a chalkboard, or the screech of metal on concrete, and it grated on my insides.

“I always knew you were a smart one,” Turk said, watching me as I had my revelations. “That’s what I like so much about you. If we’re together, we can rule the world, you know that?”

“What makes you think we’ll ever be together?”

Turk’s smile stayed put, but it drained from his eyes, and those bottomless pools of black turned evil.

I shivered. Looking at those eyes was unnerving.

“Why have we never seen this side of you before?”

Turk shrugged. “The closer we come to the Underworld, the more my other half shows.”

“What does that mean?” I demanded. “Where are we?”

“Oh, this place? It’s a shit hole. There are nicer places, but this had to do in a pinch.”

I shook my head. He wasn’t answering my question.

“It’s halfway between here and the Underworld.”

“I didn’t even know places like this existed,” I said, looking around. Somewhere, water dripped constantly, and on the far side of the cavern, I assumed there was a body of water.

“When new species started evolving, we had to find places to be that made sense,” Turk said. “Since the pure species from long ago started fucking around, making half-breeds like us, the Underworld, Earth, none of the places really work the way they used to.”

“The demons and archangels were just looking for shit, choosing people who already lived their lives to create vampires and angels,” I scoffed. They did that when they believed a soul was inherently good—or inherently bad—and that just messed everything up.

“I don’t know why you’re complaining. If it wasn’t for those angels long ago, your species wouldn’t even exist.”

“Neither would yours,” I snapped. “So I’m starting to think I have a valid point.”

Turk narrowed his eyes at me. “I could just kill you, and then you’ll be stuck with all the other dead souls in the Underworld.” He smirked at me. “But I won’t, because I’m nice like that.”

“Selfish like that,” I corrected him.

Turk was smug about the whole damn thing, proud of the abomination he was, but it was the downfall of our time.

Despite the species having been pure and true to their nature, they’d found loopholes. The angels had withdrawn from the Earth because their blood had been too coveted, and the species interbred, creating half-bloods in many ways. Humans or fae with a small percentage of angel blood, shifters with human blood in their veins, and apparently, shifters with demon blood now, too.

Turk turned back to his fire and kneeled next to it, holding out his hands to warm them.

“The downside of this shit is that I can never keep warm,” Turk said. “Not unless I’m in the Underworld all the time, but that’s not happening. I want to live on Earth, too, you know?”

I didn’t know, but I didn’t say anything. I let him ramble on, talking about himself so that I could figure out a way to escape. There had to be a way out of here. I had no idea how he’d brought me down here, but every place had at least one entrance.

I just couldn’t find the damn thing.

“That’s what I need you for,” Turk continued. “If we mate, then your position in the New York pack hierarchy will allow me the kind of power I need to stay on Earth all the time without this demon bullshit pulling me back now and then.”

“Being high up in the pack won’t do shit for your demon issues,” I pointed out.

Turk shook his head, irritated. “Well, no, but mating you will give me a tie to this world that will anchor me. I can use the power it will give me, too. When Dad becomes alpha, then I’ll have a shit ton more leverage, and your power will help me figure that part out.”

“Dario wants to become alpha?” I asked, confused. “He would never do that to Bishop. He’s loyal. Isn’t he?”
