Turk laughed, making me think that Dario wasn’t loyal to Bishop at all. Why had I thought he was?

Because that’s what everyone kept saying.I’d never actually seen it.

“You’re so naïve, Rory,” Turk said. “Good thing you’re hot. It makes up for it.”

I ignored his childish statements.

“You were never missing, were you?”

Turk shook his head, looking proud of himself. “Had you guys all fooled, huh?”

“What was the point?”

“The point was to get you here. Well, no. That’s not true. The point was to getColterhere. Or Mykel, at the very least, so that we could take him out and weaken the pack. I would take over there, then, while my dad took care of Bishop and ruled here. Then, joining forces… can you imagine the power we’ll have?”

“Those two aren’t close to each other,” I mentioned.

Turk rolled his eyes. “Yeah, Iknowthat. It’s just the start. It would have been somewhere else if another pack had been willing to take me in, but we had to start somewhere, and if we have more power now, taking over the next one will be easier.”

I snorted. “Do you know how ridiculous ‘world domination’ sounds?”

“I didn’t expect you to get it. You’re just a female.”

I ignored his backward thinking, my mind running over what he’d already said. I narrowed my eyes at him. “Your dad can’t take Bishop out. He’s not part-demon, he’s just a shifter, and not nearly as powerful—”

“Alina will take care of that.”

“Alina?”

“Yeah. She’s my real mother, and a demon. She’s posing as a fae right now, and if Bishop actually goes along with it, she’ll put a ‘spell’ on him, but it will just fuck him up and stop him from fighting. He just won’t play along.” Turk bristled. “Then again, I probably had a hand in that.” He glanced at me. “When Colter sent you instead of coming himself, I was pissed off at the change of plans, but then… I had to have you.”

“Am I supposed to be flattered?”

“Yeah, actually, you are,” he deadpanned.

“I can’t do anything for you. I’m not alpha material.”

Turk snorted. “You’re beloved by all. You have clout. The pack loves and fears you, and you’re powerful. Don’t give me shit about not being alpha material. We’ll rule so much better as a team, but that part is what got Bishop up in arms and stubborn as hell, because he wouldn’t let me have you.”

I shook my head. This ploy was unbelievable. The fact that Turk was telling me everything was even more so.

“Why are you telling me all this?” I asked.

“Because it’s too good not to share,” Turk said with a grin. “I’ve been sitting on this plan for fuckingyears, and my dad was so slow to get it all in motion.” He groaned. “Old people piss me off.” He shook his head before he looked at me again. “You’re probably thinking you’re going to tell someone else everything I just told you. Bishop or Colter… but you’re not.”

“I’m not?” I scoffed. “What makes you think I’ll keep your secret? I’m not loyal to you.”

“Because if you don’t go along with it, I’ll kill you,” Turk said.

He came closer to me, kneeling in front of me. He took my chin between his thumb and forefinger and pulsed dark magic into me. My throat closed, and my chest was tight. I struggled to breathe. The darkness filled me, wrapped itself around and dragged me down so that my body was heavy—so incredibly heavy. My head would have fallen to the ground if Turk hadn’t held onto my chin.

“You see?” he said. “Icankill you, and I will if I have to. I want you, Rory, but you’re notthatspecial. Everyone can be replaced, so you’ll play along and do what I want.” He let go of me, and I fell to the ground. As he walked away, the dark magic slowly withdrew, until I gasped for air, able to breathe again.

Turk carried on chattering, but I didn’t focus on his words anymore. I had to get out of here. Bishop was in danger, and I had to warn him of what was going on before he did something that would change everything.

If he let this demon posing as fae put a spell on him, his worst fears would come to pass, and he would lose it all to dark magic.

I turned my focus inward. Escaping here wouldn’t be enough. I had to take Turk out, too. He was more powerful now that his half-demon side showed, but if I caught him off-guard, I could do some damage—enough to get away and warn Bishop.
