“What did you think?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.

“I thought he did something to you.”

“He didn’t,” I said. “He saved me.”

“When you disappeared, I found the bloody clothes in your garbage can, and I thought something had happened. I let Colter know.”

Blood drained from my face. “What did you tell him?”

“What I thought happened to you. He’s on his way here with backup.”

I frowned. “What does that mean, Nina?”

“It means war,” she said softly.

I shook my head. “What the hell?!”

“I’m sorry. I thought you were dead. Colter was already worried about you. Something was going on with Bishop, and the bloody clothes… I put two and two together.”

“And got a whole different answer!” I cried out. “Your math is wrong. He came to save me.”

“I didn’t know,” she said.

I shook my head and fished for my phone, but it was still at the house. Damn it.

I walked to Bishop and touched his shoulder.

“We have a problem,” I said.

“What is it?” Bishop’s eyes filled with concern.

“Colter and an army of shifters are headed this way to avenge me,” I said after I gave him a nutshell recap of what Nina had just told me.

“Fuck,” Bishop bit out. “I can’t deal with this now. We have bigger fish to fry.”

“I know,” I said. “I’ll try to reach Colter. Maybe we can get him on our side, but if we can’t, we’re going to have to defend ourselves.”

Bishop pursed his lips, muttering something under his breath before he took out his phone.

“Here,” he said. “See what you can do.”

I took it and dialed Colter’s number by heart and pressed the phone against my ear.

It ran until it rolled over to voicemail.

Shit.

I tried a few more times before I tried Mykel. Still no luck. I tried a few other shifters high up in the hierarchy, and then I tried Liv. I dialed every number I knew by heart in the desperate hope that someone would answer and get me through to Colter. If I could just explain what was going on…

No one answered their phones.

That was bad news.

“Oh, no,” Sabrione said. She appeared next to me, and I jumped with her sudden closeness.

“What?” I asked, but I had a feeling I already knew.

“They’re here,” she said.
