I didn’t have to ask who she meant. Before I could think of a way to deal with this, shifters infiltrated the bar and attacked.

“No!” Bishop shouted when the first of his shifters were taken down by my wolves and cats already in their animal forms. “To arms!” he added, and the rest of his people shifted, dropping into animal forms of all shapes and sizes.

The battle was on, and the only way we could do anything now was if we fought to stay alive first. Colter’s people would kill first. If this was about avenging me, then they would probably ask questionsnever.

We had to stop this before anyone was killed. There would be no coming back from that.

When a large copper cat attacked Sabrione, she fought off the animal with her magic. I watched in horror as my brother’s wolf took out one of Bishop’s wolves right in front of me, tackling him to the ground.

Bishop’s power flooded me, and I felt his emotions. Rage, but also sadness. This wasn’t how it was meant to be.

I searched for him through the fighting creatures, who snapped and growled and hissed and clawed. When I found him, Bishop’s dark wolf was cornered by the large, writhing body of a dragon. Its scales were the color of oil, dark with a kaleidoscope of colors subtly showing as he moved.

Colter.

The dragon grabbed Bishop in its claws and flew upward toward the warehouse roof.

“Colter!” I shouted. “No!”

RORY

As if everyone were connected to each other, the fighting stopped the moment I shouted Colter’s name.

They all turned and stared at me.

Colter’s dragon eyes locked on me. He still had Bishop in his claws, but Bishop was alive and fighting. He wasn’t going to give up. His teeth gnashed as he sunk them into Colter’s scaled body. He broke through the armor-like scales with the ease of a powerful alpha, and Colter faltered, struggling to keep himself in the air, and his claws wrapped around Bishop.

Colter lowered his slick dragon body to the ground with powerful flaps of his wings, and the shifters parted like water to make space for him and Bishop.

When Colter let go of Bishop, Bishop pulled up his lips in a snarl at him.

Colter shifted back into human form, a sign that he wasn’t going to fight anymore. Bishop retreated, too. Carrying on the fight when one had already shifted into human form was a sign of cowardice, and Bishop was no coward.

“Rory?” He screamed. “You’re alive. What in the actual fuck?! I thought you were dead!”

“You have it all wrong.” I ran to him and gave him a hug. Colter squeezed me so tightly the air left my lungs momentarily. Colter loosened his grip, and I took a step back. “Bishop isn’t the bad guy here. He saved me.”

Colter frowned before he looked at Nina, who looked away guiltily.

“What the fuck?” he asked.

“I did what I thought was right. If you saw what I saw, you would have thought the same thing,” Nina said. “I made a mistake.”

That was an understatement.

“I’ll deal with you later,” Colter growled, and Nina swallowed hard. He turned his attention back to me.

“I still can’t believe you’re here.”

“I’m alive. I’m here. And our packs are not enemies,” I said. “You’re fighting the wrong people.”

“The fuck we are,” Mykel growled, stepping up from another group of shifters. He wrapped me up in his arms, and whispered, “It’s so good to see you, sis. I thought I had lost you, and I didn’t think I’d ever recover.”

I hugged him back, closing my eyes. “I’m alright, Mykel. I’m really okay.”

Mykel wasn’t done, though. “This bullshit has gone on long enough. Don’t think we don’t know what’s happening.”
