Where the hell was he?

When I saw him, Bishop’s wolf lay on the ground, bleeding. Dario was not too far away, in human form again, and covered in blood. His breathing came in ragged gasps. Bishop was still in wolf form.

“Take him out!” Dario wheezed, and a few demons turned away from the fae they’d been toying with.

I leaped forward, running for Bishop, but the dark figures got to him first. They dove upon him and, one by one, disappeared into his body.

What the fuck?

When I felt Bishop yanking at my bond, I focused on the connection between us and realized what was happening. They’d grabbed his soul, his very life essence, and the demons were dragging him to the Underworld. They were killing him by taking him where the souls of the dead went.

I shifted into human form and grabbed onto our bond with everything I had.

“No!” I screamed. “You can’t have him!”

They fought me, tugging and pulling and jerking, trying to get Bishop further and further toward the Underworld. His wolf whimpered and whined.

I couldn’t hold him. I wasn’t strong enough alone, but no one could help me. I was the only one who had a bond with him.

“Rory!” A familiar voice pierced the noise of battle around me, and Liv passed through the fight. A bright light surrounded her, and no one touched her, although she passed right by gnashing teeth and furious demons.

“They’re taking him away!” I cried, and tears rolled down my cheeks. “I can’t hold him!”

“Just hold on to that bond,” Liv instructed.

I did my best not to let Bishop slip away. His wolf squirmed less and less, the life draining out of him, and my cries turned into sobs as I struggled to hold on.

“I’m here,” Liv said. “We’re going to stop all of this. Hold on as tight as you can, okay?”

I did. I would never let go, no matter what. Bishop was my mate, my other half.

Live put her hand on my shoulder, and she shoved power into me. I cried out as it burned from the inside out, washing away every bit of darkness that clung to me. It raced through the bond like an electrical current.

I screamed, and suddenly, the world was flooded with light, blinding me. I didn’t know what I saw, what I felt, I didn’t know what was happening. All I knew was that there was no more darkness, only white light, and I could breathe again.

BISHOP

Iswam in the darkness, lost and alone.

“Hello?” I called out. My voice echoed all around me, bouncing back a thousand times. “Anybody?”

Nothing. Only the sound of my own voice and this endless weightlessness.

Was I dead? Was this what it felt like to die? I’d thought it would hurt more. I’d thought it would be… different.

“Bishop,” Rory’s voice pierced through the darkness.

I spun around, looking for where it had come from.

“Where are you?” I couldn’t see a thing.

“I’m right here,” she said, and something warm and gentle touched my cheek. I put my hand over hers and drank in her warmth, her closeness.

“Are we dead?” I asked.

“No.” I heard the smile in her voice. “We’re just fine. Come on, it’s time to wake up.”
