“What’s up there?”

“The future, my love,” she said.

I blinked my eyes open. Everything around me was white—the floors, the walls, the ceiling. Light green curtains wrapped around the hospital bed I lay in, and I became aware of the beeping of machines.

“There you are,” Elaine said with a smile when she opened the curtain. “Rory!”

Rory appeared, her face filled with concern. Relief flooded her features when her eyes locked on mine.

“Oh, Bishop,” she gasped and all but threw herself onto the bed.

“Ah—” I winced. Everything fucking hurt. I felt like I’d been boiled alive. My skin, my organs, everything ached when I moved and breathed.

“I’m sorry,” Rory said and backed away a little.

“No, come back,” I said, and I carefully pulled her against me. That was better. “What happened?”

“She got you back,” Elaine said from where she stood, a little farther away.

“It was Liv who really saved you,” I said.

“Not without Rory holding onto that bond for dear life,” Elaine said. “Liv wouldn’t have been able to save you without her.”

I blinked at Elaine and then at Rory, and they gave me a recap of what had happened. I remembered the fight, but how I’d ended up here was a blur.

“The demons wanted to take you with them to the Underworld,” Rory said. “I wouldn’t let them. I kept trying to pull you back.”

“You should have seen her,” Elaine said. “She would have followed you down there if she’d had to.”

I lifted my hand and stroked Rory’s cheek.

“Liv arrived, and she used our bond, sending light through it. The demons couldn’t hold on to you with that much angel power running through the bond, so they let go, and I could pull you back again. You were so close to death that I was scared we would lose you. You’re still healing too slowly.”

I stroked Rory’s light brown hair, in awe of the woman who would have gone to the Underworld and back to save my life.

I frowned. “What happened?”

“It’s over,” Rory said. “Colter killed Dario, and Mykel took out Turk. They made the mistake of fighting on our own turf. Just like the demons were stronger and stronger closer to the Underworld, they were weaker up here, and Turk wasn’t a very strong shifter. When they were both dead, the demons retreated. The fae ran off those who didn’t tremble in fear at Liv’s display of power.”

I cupped Rory’s cheek. “You’re incredible.”

She blushed. “I didn’t really do anything. It was everyone, working together.”

“You saved me.”

“We saved each other,” she said.

She leaned down and kissed me.

It hurt, but being with Rory was worth the pain. We were both alive, and the danger had been averted, thanks to her.

I wanted her in my life forever.

“Stay,” I begged Rory.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“I meant I want you to stay forever. Stay with me, as my mate.”
