Probably not. That didn’t mean that it wouldn’t hit him where it hurt, at least on some level, and that wassomething.

I flashed on the attic where I’d curled up between boxes, the smell of dust pinching my nose. I could still taste the fear at the back of my throat, feel it running cold through my veins as his friends looked for me in the house.

My dad had always told them that if they could catch me, they could do whatever they wanted with me. The fact that they’d never managed to catch me—thanks to my spell—hadn’t been enough to stop the emotional scars from happening.

Always running, always hiding, was what I was trying to beat. I was doing this to prove I was better than him, stronger than him.

I could live my life despite him.

Working at Sapphire was the freedom I’d needed.

Was it also the thing that would end up killing me?

“I have to go,” I said, and we ended the call. I swallowed my fear. My fox squirmed under my skin.

“It’s going to be just fine,” I said. “It’s just a job. At a sex club.”

Right.

I left my apartment and walked to the bus stop. When the bus arrived, I let it take me to downtown LA, where tonight was the first night of the rest of my life.

It was going to befine.

Harry the bouncer was in the lobby when I arrived.

“You’re back,” he said with a grin. I stared up at the tower of pure muscle.

“Looks like it,” I sniffed before I smiled.

“I have instructions to take you up.” Harry gestured with his head toward the door, and he opened it for me. He let me walk first but stepped in front of me when we were in the bar area. He didn’t walk to the stairs where I’d expected him to go.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“To your office,” he said. “It’s this way.”

Harry stopped at the bar, and the bartender leaned on the counter.

“What will it be?” he asked.

“Two tequilas,” Harry said.

“What? I can’t drink on the job.”

“Of course you can,” Harry said. “It’s aclub. You can’t getwastedon the job, but you can drink.”

The bartender pushed two tequila shots toward us, and Harry threw his back without the salt-and-lemon routine. I picked mine up and threw it back.

I winced as the bitter liquid ran down my throat.

“That’s never been my favorite,” I said.

Harry laughed. “It will help calm the nerves. Trust me.”

I nodded. Harry was a shifter like the rest of us, but something about him was warm and cuddly. A bear, maybe? If so, then he was a big teddy bear. He had to have some kind of magic to be a bouncer, though. I hadn’t picked up a magic signature the first time I’d seen him, but I’d been too worried about the interview. Now, I noticed his magic, and the magic of everyone around me. All shifters, all with the same animal that threatened to break free, and the same sex drive that connected us all in one way or another.

I glanced at the bartender, picking up on his magic, too.

Wolf.
