“I don’t know how long I’ll still be here,” she said. “Not mentally, anyway. If things keep going this way…don’ttell me I need to shift,” she said, changing her direction mid-sentence because she knew what I was going to say. “Do you want to be with her?”

“Yeah,” I said in a hoarse voice. “And it’s tripping me up because I don’t do this. I don’t feel this way about anyone, but when I was with her… something about her draws me in, tugs at me, gets me all twisted up.”

“It’s supposed to be like that,” Carletta said with a smile before a sad expression took over. “It’s how I used to feel about Felix.”

“Carletta…”

“Don’t, Jameson. We’re going to preach to each other until we’re blue in the face, and we’re both too stubborn to listen to each other’s advice, and to our own. I’m telling you, though, if you’re feeling something for this one, then be with her.”

“I don’t do shit like this. I don’t date.”

“Then sleep with her,” Carletta said. “Get it out of your system.”

I chuckled at how direct my sister was. “It’s nice to know I have my family’s support on this.”

She rolled her eyes and laughed. “I’m just saying, do what you need to do to look after yourself. You’re the alpha, Jamie. The pack needs you to be in top form. I need that from you, too. When I’m gone, no one will be left to avenge her but you.”

“Don’t talk like that,” I said.

“It’s a fact.”

“I wish you would just shift.”

“I wish you would just sleep with her.”

I laughed.

“I want to meet her.”

“Oh, no, you don’t. She’s not that special.”

Carletta tilted her head. “You see, when you say that, it just makes me think sheisthat special. You don’t say shit like that about anyone.”

I gave a dismissive wave and stood. I had to get going to be at the club on time. Friday nights were busy.

“She’s just a secretary,” I said over my shoulder.

“The most cliché love story of all,” Carletta called after me.

“It’s not a love story,” I grumbled and slammed the door behind me, cutting off my sister’s laughter.

JAMESON

Iwalked to the offices where Amy and now Oaklee worked.

“Are you busy?” I asked Oaklee when I pushed open the door.

“No,” she said, looking up, surprised. “I mean, I’m not doingnothing, but I can leave this for later.” Her cheeks turned pink.

“It wasn’t a trick question,” I said. “I want you to sit in on a meeting with me.”

Oaklee nodded and stood.

Amy glanced at me through the archway that led to her office, her lips pursed. Usually, she was the one who sat in on meetings and took notes, but I wanted Oaklee to learn the ropes. Besides, I wanted to be closer to Oaklee.

“I’ll just man the office while you’re gone,” Amy sniffed.
