“The reason you’re late. Is it because you had to meet with your dad first?”

“What?” she asked, confusion and horror flickering across her face in equal measure. “I don’t know what—”

“That’s what you’re here totalkto me about, isn’t it? You’re Tate Armstrong’s daughter.”

Oaklee’s face paled, and she looked like she was going to faint. She swallowed hard, and through our bond, I could feel her panic. Her pulse jumped in her throat like that of a caged animal, terrified.

She had every reason to be terrified.

“How did you find out?” she asked in a strained voice.

Carletta let out a wail. “It’s true? You’re here on his behalf, oh, and here I thought you were everything we needed after all the hell.”

“It’s not true,” Oaklee wailed.

I narrowed my eyes at her. “You’re not Tate’s daughter?”

Oaklee squeezed her eyes shut, trying to keep it together. “I am, but I’m not here on his behalf. I’m here to get away from him.”

“I don’t believe you,” I snapped.

“Why not?” Oaklee demanded. “Do I look like I’m here to cause shit for you?”

She didn’t look like that at all.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked. “If you have nothing to hide, if you’re trying to get away from him, why didn’t you tell me who you were?”

“Because I was scared you were going to kill me for it,” she blurted out. “You’re Jameson Ford. You make shifters fight to the death for fun!”

I stared at her. “I’m getting sick of everyone thinking I’m so terrible, but maybe I should give it a shot, maybe I’ll like it. We can start with you and Tate in the ring and see what we get, huh?”

Oaklee looked horrified.

“Jameson!” Carletta gasped, almost more horrified than Oaklee was.

I glared at my sister. “Stay out of this. Tate killed Delaney, and Oaklee lied about who she is. There’s nothing else that can be said about it.”

Oaklee shook her head again and again.

“It’s not like that. I’m running from my dad because of what I did.”

“What did you do?” I asked.

“I took—”

“You know what? I don’t want to know. I can’t trust you, and I don’t give a shit what your plan is. I’m going to tell you what Felix told you—get out of my town, and take your goons with you. You have one less now, since Felix is taking care of one of them, but I’m sure you can find mindless henchmen by the dozen if you play your cards right.”

“Jameson, don’t do this,” Oaklee pleaded. She was terrified, but everyone who got caught in their own tricks were scared.

I slammed a wall between us, using my magic to block what she felt from me so that I wouldn’t be influenced by how much I cared for her.

“Before you go, tell me one thing,” I said.

“What?” Oaklee asked in a small voice.

“How did you get someone to forge the mate bond between us?”

“I didn’t!” Oaklee choked out. “It’s real.”
