“What happened?”

“That thing nearly killed you, is what happened,” Nadia said, nodding toward my chest. “Does it hurt?”

“No,” I said. “It just… I thought it was happening again. It hurt, and then it didn’t.”

“Autumn said it might happen.”

“Autumn?” I asked.

Nadia nodded.

“My dad…”

“Jameson—”

“Killed him,” I said, remembering. “When he tried to kill Jameson and nearly killed me—”

“You saved the alpha.”

“I saved my mate.”

“You’re a hero.”

“I’m alive.” I was suddenly overcome with emotion. A lump rose in my throat, and tears poured out of my eyes involuntarily.

“What happened?” I asked in a whisper.

“When Jameson killed Tate, the magic wouldn’t stop eating at you. I was at home with Danny after Jameson sent me away, and they came to me asking if there was anyone who could help. I told them to find Autumn.”

“How did you know?” I asked.

“My mom knew Augusta, too, remember?”

Right. I’d forgotten about that.

“I thought she didn’t want anything to do with it,” I said. “I thought—”

“She didn’t want anything to do with the magic that created the amulet,” Carletta said, coming into the room with cup of steaming… something. When she put it down, I realized it was tea.

Herbal.

“Is she here?”

“She is,” Carletta said. “Jameson is talking to her. We’re thinking about getting some fae on board with the pack, in case something like this happens again. A lot of alphas work with fae these days, so Jameson is getting on board.”

I tried to sit up again, and this time, I had more luck. Nadia handed me the tea.

“How did she stop it?” I asked. “The amulet was killing me.”

“It was trying to trap your power,” Carletta said. “I don’t know how it works, Autumn tried to tell me, and I still don’t get it. Since Xantha and Tate were both dead—the two people who’d set this thing in motion—Autumn could stop it from happening, and she destroyed it.”

I blinked at Carletta and then Nadia. “It’s gone?”

They both nodded.

“Delaney is really gone now, too,” Carletta said softly.

Nadia reached for her and squeezed her hand.
