I wasn’t sure when she’d gotten close with the alpha’s family, but a lot had happened while I’d been out.

“How long have I been asleep for?” I asked.

“Two days,” Carletta said. “We were worried you wouldn’t wake up, but Jameson wasn’t. He said he could feel you, and as long as he could, it would be fine.”

At the mention of his name, my heart leaped. I missed him. I felt like it had been weeks since I’d seen him last.

“He’ll be here soon,” Nadia said.

I looked at Carletta.

“So, you shifted, huh?”

Carletta shrugged as if there was nothing to it. “It had to be done.”

“You were magnificent.”

Carletta smiled sadly. “I should have done it before. I should have been able to save her.”

“You couldn’t have known,” I said softly. “No one could have predicted something like that. I want to tell you I’m sorry because it’s my dad, but I don’t even know how someone could be like that.”

“It’s not anyone’s fault,” Carletta said and took my hand. “We know that now, and we’re learning. It’s a process, but we’re not looking back anymore. We have to keep moving forward, you know?”

I understood that now, too.

I’d been so hung up on getting revenge that I’d let it hold me back. It had gotten me in more trouble rather than setting me free. Now that he was gone and I’d let go of that, I could move forward. I understood exactly what Carletta and Jameson had to be going through, too.

The door opened, and Jameson cleared his throat.

“We’ll leave you to it,” Carletta said with a smile, and she and Nadia left the room.

Jameson came to me.

“Hey, you,” he grinned and sat down on the bed.

“You’re here.”

“I am,” he said. “I should never have let you go.”

“I’m sorry,” I said, and tears threatened to roll down my cheeks again. God, what was up with all the crying?

“I’m sorry, too,” Jameson said. “It was one big fuckup, but it’s over now. He’s dead, we’re free, and Delaney… can finally rest in peace.”

I bowed my head sadly. “I hate that it’s my dad who did that.”

“He’s gone now,” Jameson said. He cupped my cheek, lifting my head so I looked into his eyes. “I won’t ever let anything happen to you again. I promise you.”

“I love you,” I said. “I didn’t get a chance to tell you that before.”

Jameson leaned forward and kissed me.

“I love you, too.”

He stroked his fingers through my hair.

“I don’t want you going back to that apartment,” he said. “It’s not in a good neighborhood, and you deserve better.”

“I couldn’t afford anything else.”
