“I love you too, Lays.” My voice cracks with emotion.

“I don’t want this to just be a causal thing. You and me, I want it to be the real deal,” she says and the conviction in her voice makes my heart want to jump right out of my chest.

“Lays, it’s you plus me for life. Forever.” My words cause her to grin wide.

“K-i-s-s-i-n-g in a tree like forever?” she adds.

“We were matched, baby. Like by the best matchmaker in the world. You can’t argue with that.” I wink at her.

“Real-life soul mates.” She sighs, playing along.

“I’m going to kiss you now.” My voice is low, unable to be this close to her and not kiss her.

“If you must,” she replies.

I really must, so I do, and there’s no better feeling than kissing the woman you love and knowing she loves you back.

I’m going to kiss this woman stupid for the rest of my life.

Epilogue

AFTERNOON PICK-ME-UP

THREE MONTHS LATER…

LAYLA

“Ruth, you can’t just involve yourself in everyone’s love life.” I rub my temple, trying to keep my tone even.

“Darling, it’s what I do. It’s who I am,” Ruth replies.

“It’s in every fiber of her being, Layla,” Cassie adds.

I shoot an “I’m not impressed” glare at my best friend, who sits next to my grandma on the other side of my desk.

“Exactly,” Ruth quips.

On a sigh, I tell her again, “Stella doesn’t want help to find love. She’s not into it. Sworn it off. She’s not receptive to our line of work.”

“She’s a real Theo Abbot.” Cassie laughs. Again, I shoot her a look. She lifts her shoulders and grins as if to say “what? It’s the truth.”

“Yes, yes, I understand all that, but everyone wants to find love, dear. Even Stella.” Ruth stands, pushing out of her seat. “If I remember correctly, and my memory is impeccable, neither of you was receptive to my matchmaking ability either. And look what I accomplished.

Cassie’s grin grows even wider as she looks over at me. “Look at her taking all the credit for our happily ever afters.”

I just shake my head, but this time I fight off a smile.

Ruth sticks her nose up in the air. “Poppycock, you two know you would both be lost in the abyss of lonely spinsterhood if I hadn’t stepped in. But alas, my efforts will go unrewarded.” She turns on her heel and heads for the door.

“We love you, Ruth,” Cassie sings.

“I know, darling. It’s why I put up with you both.” She raises a hand in goodbye but doesn’t look back before leaving my office.

I sink back into my chair and let out a loud groan.

“I really do love the ol’ bat,” Cassie says. I laugh.

“Yeah, but she’s a busybody who knows no bounds.”
