I kiss the top of her head and pull her with me as I walk out of the nursery. We say goodbye to Rosa, then Adam and Taylor, the men we hired as security who actually live with us. Ten minutes later, we’re driving down the narrow roads of our small town on Falk Isle. A slow song fills the car as the night slowly descends.

“Our life now is such a contrast to how it was. I was a nomad, and you were one of the leaders of a criminal organization–The Sanctum, as they now call it. Do you miss it?” she asks me, her hand on my thigh as I make my way through town.

“Sometimes. The art and contraband deals I started the business with weren’t really about the money. It brought us a pretty penny, but I wouldn’t have kept at it if it wasn’t for the excitement, the adrenaline. But even surrounded by all those people, people I loved and cared for, it was… lonely. What about you, do you miss it?”

I place my hand over hers.

“Same. I miss it sometimes for the same reasons. The thrill of a new business deal was quite something. I would never go back, though. I’m sure I can find another way to get that… excitement.”

I glance at her, and her cheeky smile makes me want to stop the car in the middle of the road and make her show me exactly what type of excitement she’s thinking about.

“Eyes on the road, mister.”

But my dick wants something else entirely.

“I wonder if the guys will hate me forever for taking you out of the business.” She changes the subject.

“They don’t hate you, Annika.”

“One certainly does,” she mutters.

“Don’t worry, they’ll understand. Maybe not right now, but they will when love eventually hits them out of nowhere, just like it hit me.”

She chuckles, and it fills my chest with warmth.

“Who do you think will be next?”

“I don’t know. They’re not ready yet, that’s for sure. Power and money are their priority,” I reply.

“It won’t be Finn, that’s for sure.”

“No…”

She’s not referring just to what happened to Hanna, but to the new habits he’s been developing. My brother, with his tall, fit build, blond curls, and baby blues, has always been popular, with girls in school and women after. Only, now he’s been fully embracing those opportunities.

“Carter?” She asks.

“Only if he finds the spawn of Satan…”

“Or the complete opposite?” Annika says, giggling. “Maddox?”

“Possible, but I think it might be Vin.”

“The Serpent, of all people?!”

I nod. “He was in love once, not that long ago. He thinks he hides it well, but he’s been keeping tabs on her. Not stalking, but once in a while, he makes sure… she’s okay.”

“And no one else knows?”

“Maddox does. The others weren’t even here when Vin was with her.”

“Oh… Did he keep her away from them?”

“Not really. I think they knew of her, but Finn and Carter were away at university when Vin got with her, and it was… intense. He was possessive, protective, and she was almost forbidden. She comes from a different world than the one he is from—the high society of Queenscove. It looked like he tried hard to stay away from her at first. Once they started, he was reluctant to flaunt her, not only because of her family, but because she was his weakness, and he didn’t want that to put her in danger.”

“What happened?”

“I’m not sure. He just broke up with her one day, out of nowhere. The guys were still at university, so I doubt they even knew about them. Madds seems to have been sworn to secrecy for some reason. Either way, I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of Morrigan O’Rourke.”
