“Hide anyway, even if it’s under a goddamn desk, just hide, okay? I’ll be there before you know it, baby.” But I’m struggling to believe my own words.

Our tires screech on the asphalt as Ben speeds down the serpentines of the hill. I can’t believe Bartiste pulled a stunt like this in the middle of the goddamn day.

“What if… what if you won’t?” she whispers.

“Goddamnit, hurry the fuck up, Ben!” I yell so loud, my throat hurts and the man flinches.

I can’t. I can’t answer her. I can’t allow myself to think this could happen.

I have no idea how it came to this. How my life turned upside down on its axis in such a way that it only makes sense with her in it. I rolled my eyes at people claiming love at first sight, or merely a few dates before they claimed mad love. It made no sense at all. Until it did.

“Baby, I…”

“Ronan…” she interrupts on a shaky whisper. “I’m late. I think I’m pregnant.”

CHAPTER 13

RONAN

I think I’m pregnant…I think… I’m pregnant.

The echo of each word falls with each thump of my heart. My mind is devoid of anything else, and the haunting sounds trap me inside of it. I can’t escape. It goes on, and on… and on.

Ronan…?

“Ronan?” Her sheepish voice manages to catch my attention. Barely.

Then the car swerves as Ben takes the last sharp turn down the hill and onto one of Queenscove’s main streets, pulling me fully back into the now.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to… uhm… I just thought you should know.”

Oh hell, there’s a whole fucking criminal organization knocking at her door, and she thinks I might have a problem with what she told me? God, I’m a fucking idiot.

“My little witch, we’ll have all the time in the world to talk about anything and everything. For now, I want you to stay safe and hidden until I get there.” My words come out with such conviction, I think I manage to fool even myself.

“I don’t know if I can do that,” she says in a shaky voice.

“Do they know where you are?”

“I don’t think so. No one’s attempted to get in yet.”

“That’s good. Stay low to the ground. Away from any window and have as much furniture as possible around you. Okay?”

“Okay.”

I can tell how hard she’s trying to show that she’s strong, even in a whisper.

“You’re going to be okay, baby.” I wish I could turn this into a promise. “I know I fucked up. I should have been there, and I’ll spend the rest of my goddamn life making it up to you.”

“All of it?”

“I would spend more if I could.”

A low chuckle coming from her breaks my fucking heart. What if… What if this is the last time I hear that sound from her? The last time I hear her voice. The last time I make her smile.

Suddenly, I hear a commotion in the background and a yelp from her, but she quickly muffles it.

“They’re here…” she whispers, and I think I stop breathing.
