Page 84 of Rocking Her Silence

Wherever you are, wherever I go, you are in my arms, and I'm in yours because you're a part of me, and I'm a part of you,

and there's nothing else in the universe that comes close to being this true.

A billion times,

a billion places,

a billion songs,

a billion faces… and I see only you.

And I see only you…

Mia staresat the screen for so long I start to get worried, then she looks up at me, and I see that her eyes are shining with tears that are only now just beginning to fall down her cheeks.

She tries to sign, but her hands are shaking so badly that she can't, and she drops the phone on the bed instead.

"Baby, are you okay?"

She nods.

She hugs her chest with arms crisscrossed in an'X'pattern.

She's signing the word'Love.'

She's not using the sign she taught me for when you love something that's material. She's making the same sign we use on each other’s, elevating my song to the ethereal plan.

The gesture itself means the world to me.

That she would love it so much…

When she starts to cry for real, I pull her to my chest and make shushing sounds against the side of her neck so she can feel them.

She pushes off my chest, only to grab my face and cover it in a shower of kisses. “Happy tears —she assures me, her lips trembling while she moves them as I dry them for her— happy tears, Carson… I love it. I love it so much! It's so beautiful…”

Then she throws her arms around me again, and I hug her back.

For a while, we stay just like that, then she squirms to be let go and reaches for my phone again, unlocking it.

Her eyes go back to the lyrics of the ballad.

She taps one baby-pink nail at a specific line.

… It's on the wings that brought you here…

I'm guessing she's pointing at it to show me it's one of her favorites…

"You like that one, Mia?"

She shakes her head, and I frown. "You don't? Well, I guess I could change it. This is still a work in progress. It needs to be hammered down quite a bit and slimmed down, too. Some stuff will go, some stuff will change… and—"

She shakes her head again emphatically.'No, no, Carson! Don't you dare change it! I like it. Love it, in fact! But that's not why I was pointing at it…'

I cross my arms, confused. "Okay, then what's with it?"

She sighs and then starts to sign, eyes still full of tears, lips quivering… she can't manage but a few broken moves. She tries to talk instead, but she can't and gives me a little trembling, frustrated smile.
