I reached behind me and slipped one of his hands into mine. “Hang on. Dad, please hang on.”

Zane got out quickly and carried Dad out of the car. Casey was beside us, but he wasn’t talking or moving. His face was still pale as he stared down at Dad, and then he turned and looked up at me. There was a question in his eyes, one I didn’t know the answer to.

“It’s going to be okay,” I mumbled, trying to comfort him.

He looked at me blankly and said nothing.

The damage was worse than I could have ever imagined.

Thankfully, the hospital did a great job getting Dad in quickly. And after they’d taken him in on the gurney, I turned around and realized Casey had disappeared.

I immediately alerted Zane.

His face tightened, and he nodded.

“I’ll find him,” he said. “You stay with your mom.”

ZANE

I knew there was a possibility all of this would go left quickly.

I just didn’t expect it to go up in flames quite so disastrously.

I thought I would at least be able to get a few words out before Charlotte’s parents lost their shit. I wanted to explain that I had done things wrong with Kelly, but I planned to make it right. I planned to do the honest thing even though I knew this was a dangerously complicated situation.

I didn’t blame her parents for freaking out. There were a lot of reasons why my relationship with Charlotte was inappropriate. Our age gap, the fact that I was her sister’s ex-husband…our relationship was fucked up on so many levels.

I wasn’t entirely comfortable with it, either.

God, I should have stayed away from her in the first place, but I hadn’t. I’d fucked up with a girl who was far too young and innocent for a bastard like me.

But I couldn’t regret it.

I don’t want to be someone you just take care of,she’d said to me in the car.I wanted to be more than that.

I nearly laughed thinking about it. It was a ludicrous statement.

Did she not understand how much she fucking meant to me?She was everything to me.

But I didn’t deserve her, and I knew it. The knowledge was ripping into me, the guilt not allowing me to give her what I could clearly see glowing in her eyes.

As I walked through the hallways looking for Casey, I heard quick footsteps coming up from behind me. I turned to see Charlotte running up to me.

“I told you I would find him,” I said. “Go back to your mother.”

“Let me come with you,” she said, her eyes worried. “Casey…I think he figured it out. That you’re his dad.”

“Yeah, I figured,” I said. “I saw his face when your dad said it.”

Regret lined her features. I knew she was remorseful about everything that happened, but there was no going back now. “He’s going to be very upset.”

“I get it. I can handle it. Go back and spend time with your mother. I’ll take care of him.”

Worry still filled her expression, so I brushed her cheek, feeling a clenching in my chest when I said, “Trust me.”

She bit her lip and then nodded. “About my dad….”
