Renata speaks up. “How sure is everyone that Burian’s even going back to that store? What if he moves?”

“I’ll follow.” I give Carmine a hard look. “Don’t tell me you’ll have one of your guys do it. None of them are good enough.”

He waves that away. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”

“Then it’s settled.” I lean back, eyeing my two partners. Carmine seems excited, like this is some fun game, while Craig looks like he’s going to piss himself. Both responses are probably less than ideal, but it could be worse. I could be all alone. I could be doing this with only Renata for backup.

“Tomorrow,” Carmine says, shoving back from the table. “In a day, this will all be over.” He squeezes my shoulder as he leaves the coffee shop.

Craig gets up once he’s gone. “I fucking hate this,” he says, looking from me to Renata and back again. “I joined the bureau to fight guys like you. I thought I could make a difference. I wanted to save lives.”

“You’re making a difference,” I tell him, and it’s even true. Though he probably doesn’t believe me. “Burian’s better off dead.”

He nods, then slinks away, walking like there’s an anvil strapped to his back.

Leaving me alone with Renata. She leans against my shoulder. We lapse into a comfortable silence as I finish my coffee and she picks at the remains of a scone.

“I noticed there was no role for me in your very detailed plan,” she says, not looking at me. She stirs an old coffee, spoon pinging off the ceramic mug, but doesn’t drink from it. “Was that just a little oversight?”

I hug her against me. “No, it wasn’t.”

“You’re cutting me out.”

“I’m not taking any needless risks.”

I expect her to argue. I figure she’ll push to be involved. Instead, she only turns her head and kisses my cheek. “Okay.”

“Okay?” I lean away, staring at her. “Really?”

She spreads her hands, grinning. “What am I supposed to do? You know what Burian looks like now. You’ve seen him. I’d just get in the way.”

“I’m honestly shocked right now.”

“Don’t be a dick.” She pushes me playfully. “Now come on. You have a busy day tomorrow, and I want to fuck you like it’s the last night we might spend together.”

A thrill runs into my chest. I grin at her, heart hammering into my ears. “That sounds like a good plan to me.”

She leads me away by the hand, and I wonder if maybe she’s right.

Chapter38

Renata

His hands move over my body.

It’s not a normal touch.

Not the touch of a man in lust. Not the touch of a man lost in the throes of pure want, a physical desire. Not the touch of a man that enjoys the skin under his fingers.

It’s the touch of a man that can’t stop himself.

The touch of a man that is so beyond himself, so lost in the deep connection between our bodies, that he can’t seem to find the end of himself and the beginning of me.

He keeps feeling every inch of my body, fingers exploring, palm spanking, lips kissing, sucking, licking. All the small corners of me, the little folds, the imperfections, like my flesh is the map of my soul and he wants to memorize it before he leaves in the morning. Like there’s salvation between my legs, down my spine, under my tongue.

We both know what this is. Neither of us bothers to say it out loud. I ride him, sweating, shivering as I slam down his length, moaning his name, whispering, back arched, quivering. I kiss him, bite his lower lip, make him grunt as I go faster, slamming down, our bodies joined together, the gaps between us somehow shrinking until there’s nothing left.

There’s no thinking. No worries, no tomorrow. Only right now.
