“Says who?”

That came from Duke, shocking the hell out of me.

“Yeah, says who?” Fox grinned. “You have your shit to do. Let the men go do men shit.”

“Men shit?” I retorted. “Need I remind you of the last time I was in the ring with you?”

His grin slipped from his face, replaced with a cool smile. “I appreciate your lady skills, but the man is searching for his kid.”

“Not my kid,” Duke corrected.

“I know what it’s like, needing to have something to do. I swear, I’ll be on my best behavior the entire time.”

He held up the Vulcan sign, like that meant anything. “I wouldn’t trust you if you were going to buy Funyuns,” I said in a low voice.

“It’ll be fine,” Duke cut in. “Let me use the restroom and we can leave.”

“Yeah, I’ll just stay here,” Scottie said. “No need to invite me along. After all, I just flew you out here and nearly vomited. But it’s cool. I don’t mind being left behind with nothing to do.”

“I knew you’d understand,” Fox winked at him.

As soon as Duke left the room, I grabbed Fox by the arm and wrenched it behind his back, shoving him up against the wall. “If you so much as get him dirty, I’ll make sure you and Anna can never have kids. Do you understand me?”

“Uh…is that future kids? Because I gotta tell ya, I think I got her pregnant already.”

“Fox!”

“I’m just saying, you’re not going to kill our kid or anything, right?”

“Are you fucking listening to me?” I snapped.

“Yeah, yeah,” he argued as I wrenched his arm higher. “Fuck, you don’t have to hurt me. He’ll come back in one piece.”

“Better than one piece,” I snapped.

I slammed my foot into the back of his knee, because I didn’t think he was understanding. When his knee buckled, I kicked the other foot out from underneath him. He fell to his knees, wrenching his arm higher. He didn’t make a peep, but his breathing picked up slightly as his jaw clenched.

“Duke isn’t like us. He doesn’t get a kick out of killing others. He doesn’t feel the same release we do when we get wrapped up in action. You need to remember that.”

“He’s a Ranger,” Fox argued.

“Retired, and he wants to live his life in peace. Don’t fuck that up.”

“Okay, geez.”

I started to release him when he started talking again.

“But like…if he does it on his own, am I supposed to stop him?”

“What do you think?”

“I think I really don’t want to piss you off, and women tend to be confusing.”

“Use your best judgment,” I snapped.

I released him and walked away when I heard Duke coming back into the room. He stopped when he saw Fox kneeling on the ground against the wall.

“What’s going on?”
