Her eyes popped wide at my declaration. Yeah, it was a little fast, especially for someone like Rae. She wasn’t looking for a guy like me—a mechanic. I was dangerous in her eyes, though I still didn’t understand it. My conquests were greatly exaggerated. And as much as she found it funny, it chipped away at my heart every time she made a joke. It was like she was telling me I wasn’t worthy, and I already had my doubts about that.

So, I stood there with my heart on my sleeve, waiting to hear what she would say, if anything. The more time that passed, the more I knew exactly where this was going. She didn’t feel the same way, and probably never would. I nodded and stepped back. I talked a good game, but I didn’t want to stick around to hear her say she didn’t feel the same.

“Wait,” she said, squeezing my hand. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

Just as quickly as hope flared, it fizzled and died. I quirked my lips, trying to make this easier for her. “It’s okay.”

“No, it’s not,” she insisted. “I just…” She pursed her lips angrily. “Why did you have to do that? You dropped the L word on me.”

“I know, it wasn’t fair. But I couldn’t—”

“Do you ever shut up?” she asked. “Geez, you talk more than any woman I know. And if you’d give me a chance to talk after I got the shock of my life, you would have heard me say that I’m falling for you too.”

I stared at her in stunned silence. “Uh…”

“It’s not that hard to believe. You’re a great guy, and if I make jokes, it’s because I’ve never felt this way before. So…wipe the drool off your face and listen to what I’m saying.”

I nodded, still trying to wrap my head around what she was saying. “So…you love me.”

“I said I was falling for you. Let’s not push it.”

“But…falling is falling in love.” I grinned at her. This was just like the time she said sleeping with me was amazing. “Some would say it’s kismet.”

“What the fuck does that even mean? Do you have a vagina I don’t know about? Where the hell do you get this stuff?”

“Bowie. He’s such a softie.”

“No, he’s not.”

“He’s not,” I agreed. “But it was better to blame it on him.”

She huffed in irritation. “So, are you going to kiss me or was this some grand speech that was bound to go nowhere?”

“Do you want me to kiss you?”

“Alright,” she said, shoving past me.

I grabbed her arm and yanked her back to me, crushing my lips to hers just as she was about to protest. She sank into my touch and kissed me back like she’d been dying to touch me all day.

“That was so beautiful,” Scottie said from across the room.

“Not the smoothest I’ve seen,” Fox replied, “but the kiss was ten stars.”

“Can you have ten stars for a kiss? Isn’t it a five star rating?”

“You can have a ten rating. Why don’t stars apply to that?”

Rae rolled her eyes as they continued to argue about the rating of the kiss. She pulled me to her and pressed her lips to mine, blocking out the banter.

Well, most of it.

“So, when you have sex, do you give the woman five stars or ten points?”

Yeah, I couldn’t ignore it all. After all, I had to keep up on the ratings system.
