“Don’t you feel just a little bad about leaving him behind?” Scottie asked.

Fox was driving because frankly, he couldn’t be trusted to step outside the vehicle for the meet. He was a loose cannon and as much as I…didn’t mind working with him, there was no way I was risking this operation because of him.

“No,” I said matter of factly. “There was no way that he would be rational with Theo on the line. He might not like being left behind, but it has to be this way.”

“So…say he snuck into the trunk—”

I whipped around to look at him, anger filling every corner of my body. “Did you slip him into the trunk?”

“Me?” he chuckled nervously. “Why would you think I did it?”

“You’re right.” I lowered the partition I’d raised earlier to block out Fox’s incessant chattering about Funyuns. “Fox, what did you do?”

“Well, I changed into this getup for you. I brushed my teeth. I scoured the hotel room for my hidden Funyuns. Not cool, by the way—”

“Fox!” I snapped. “Did you or did you not sneak Duke into the trunk?”

“I doed,” he answered. “Payback, bitch.”

“Did you just call me a bitch?”

“I doed.”

I restrained myself from shooting him and spun around in the seat, pulling at the tab to pull the back seat down. Glaring into the darkness, I saw the outline of Duke’s body crunched inside.

“Are you comfortable in there?”

“Not at all. You wanna let me out?”

I thought about it for all of two seconds before slamming the back of the seat into place. Turning around, I crossed my arms over my chest.

“It’s gotta be hot back there,” Scottie noted.

“Yeah? He can suffer. He knew he wasn’t supposed to come along.”

“Would you have stayed away if the situations were reversed?”

No, I wouldn’t have, but that didn’t matter. “I can’t believe he talked you into this,” I said to Fox.

“He made a very compelling argument.”

“Yeah? Did he offer you Funyuns?”

“Shawarma on the side. Since you told Cash I was responsible for blowing up the building, he took away shawarma. I did what I had to.”

“You put the job in jeopardy.”

“Not true, my little kickass friend. A man like Duke is highly trained. I think you’re forgetting just how much experience he has.”

“I haven’t forgotten.”

“He’s been in situations like this before. He knows how to handle himself.”

“He’s a liability,” I argued. “He can’t think clearly!”

“And he has a right to try and fix what he perceives as a fuckup,” Scottie insisted. “There’s no way I’d let someone go in and do all the heavy lifting for me. Sorry, I’m with Fox on this one.”

“And what exactly am I supposed to do with him? I’m the buyer. Is he my muscle?”
