“Oh, fuck.” I heard Scottie groan. “Brock, you gotta get me out of here. Quinn’s here,” he hissed.

Quinn narrowed her eyes and stalked over to the curtain adjacent to mine. She ripped it back and Scottie flinched, doing his best not to sink any further into the bed. “You got blown up?” she asked incredulously.

“Yeah, but—”

“By a plane?”

“Uh—”

“You fly planes,” she ranted. “You throw up on planes!”

“Yeah, but—”

“Does everything with you have to be about planes?” Scottie’s jaw dropped open, but nothing came out. “And if you say anything about building a fire, let me tell you, there’s one blazing at the airfield right now. Just say the word and I’ll toss you in!”

And I thought I could kill a mood. So much for the happy reunion between two people that supposedly loved each other. I pushed up out of bed, ready to call it a day.

“Well, this has been fun—”

“Whoa, where do you think you’re going?”

“Home, where there aren’t people bitching at each other.”

He chuckled at that, pressing his hand on my shoulder. “I can guarantee they’ll be arguing there too.”

“Don’t give a fuck. At least I won’t be here.”

“You need to be checked by a doctor first.”

There was no way I was waiting around for a doctor. I swung my legs over the side. Damn, my back hurt.

“Fox, you want to help me out here?”

I looked over my shoulder at Fox, but his eyes were locked on the screen. “Leaving is bad,” he said as he popped another Funyun in his mouth.

“Wow, that was really inspirational,” Duke said.

Fox held up his yellow thumb and then ignored us. I finally looked at the TV, laughing when I saw it was a musical. Of course, that’s how they kept Fox entertained during all this.

I looked around for my clothes, but couldn’t find them. I slid the rest of the way off the bed, fighting the dizziness upon standing. Duke’s hand was already on my arm, though I didn’t realize it until the black spots disappeared from my vision.

“Still think it’s wise to go somewhere?”

“Where are my clothes?”

“Shredded.”

I sighed and slipped my feet into the hospital slippers at the side of the bed. I was pretty sure Duke got them for me and they didn’t just hand these out to anyone. I started shuffling my way around the room like a little old lady, only realizing how big the room was when I looked up and down the aisle in either direction. We must be taking up the whole ER.

“You can barely walk.”

“That’s what they told my grandma too,” I said, refusing to sit my ass in bed a minute longer. I just needed to work the kinks out. I winced as pain shot up through my hip. Damn, I must have hit the ground harder than I thought. I started pulling back curtains, shaking my head when I came up with someone I didn’t want to see. Finally, I reached Cash and hobbled over to his bedside, ignoring Eva and plopping down on the mattress.

“You look like shit.”

“You should see your face,” he grunted. “You were closer than I was. Anything broken?”

I shrugged as if it didn’t matter. “Not that I can tell.”
