His grin was back. “So, you offered to take her home.”

“No, I told her she couldn’t go home.”

“Uh-huh. I see what you did there.”

It actually hadn’t been my intention to get her to come home with me. It was an added bonus for sure, but not what was on my mind when I walked into the hospital and saw her lying in that bed. “Whatever you’re thinking, it’s not that.”

“So, the woman of your dreams is in the hospital…how did that happen again?”

I rolled my eyes at his probing. There was no point in keeping anything from him. He’d just keep asking until he found out. “There was an explosion.”

“Uh-huh. The plane, right? I heard about it.”

“Who didn’t?” I asked rhetorically.

“And you were at the hospital because…”

“Because they were looking for FNG and followed some lead to the airfield.”

“All of them?” he asked, his eyebrows shooting up.

“That’s what I said.”

“Fucking stupid,” he huffed, shaking his head.

Fortunately for me, Bowie was in the know about OPS. When he joined me two years ago, I informed Cash that the only way I’d take the offer was if Bowie was also in the loop. Since he agreed, Bowie knew about everything I knew. I didn’t hide a thing from him, not that I knew a whole hell of a lot.

“So, Cash called me in to help him out.”

“And Rae came home with you.” He shook his head at me. “Man, is there any woman that doesn’t fall for your charms?”

“Uh…the woman down the hall. She’s only sleeping here.”

“In your bed,” he hissed. “Don’t pass up this opportunity.”

“To what? Fuck her in her sleep? No thanks.”

“No, to woo her.”

I barked out a laugh at that. “Sure.”

“What? I’m fucking serious.”

“What do you know about wooing a woman?”

He studied me for a minute. “Okay, not a whole hell of a lot, but I know that when there’s a woman in your bed, here to sleep with you or not, you take advantage of that shit. Feel her out. She’s vulnerable right now, ready to fall into your arms and cry.”

“Now I know you’re full of shit.”

“Why?” he asked, almost like he was offended by my statement.

“Because if you knew Rae, you’d realize that offering a shoulder to cry on is likely to get you a kick in the balls. The woman doesn’t cry. She doesn’t have a single soft bone in her body. That woman is made of steel.”

“But she’s down now.”

“Correction, she’s injured. That doesn’t mean she’d let down her defenses. In fact, I’m not sure she has actual defenses. Not emotionally anyway.”

“Every woman has emotional defenses. They’re born with them.”
