“Three!” I snapped, “and if you think you can pull one more out of me, I can guarantee you’ll never get another chance like this.”

That stopped him, and he slowly turned around to face me. “Three.”

DUKE

This was a mistake. Agreeing to take her home with me was the same as asking for a bullet to the head. I wanted her so bad, but it wasn’t like there was a promise of sex at the end of the night. There were only three questions, which was pretty fucking amazing, but knowing it wouldn’t go anywhere after that was the problem.

I glanced over at Rae as I pulled down my driveway and parked. She was asleep against the window, which wasn’t surprising after the forty-five minute drive. I made sure we stuck around long enough for a doctor to check her out, which only succeeded in pissing her off. Still, I had the peace of mind that she was okay before taking her home.

I got out and headed around to her side, prepared to carry her in if necessary, but before I could open the door, she pushed it open and stepped out. I watched carefully as she swayed on her feet, ready to catch her if she fell. However, I did nothing to intervene, knowing Rae was strong-willed and independent. Interfering would only piss her off.

“Do you want some dinner?”

“Sleep,” she grumbled.

I nodded and headed for the door, looking over my shoulder every so often to make sure she didn’t fall over. Everything in me was screaming to walk beside her and hold her up, but I somehow resisted. I unlocked the door and led her inside, nodding at Bowie, who was sitting at the counter.

“Rae, you remember Bowie.”

“Yeah,” she grumbled, walking past me. “Bedroom.”

I ignored the knowing grin from Bowie and led her down the hall to my bedroom. It just so happened to be the only room available since Bowie lived with me. I may not have mentioned that to her, but she didn’t ask if there were separate rooms, so I decided it was fine.

I shoved the door open and led her inside. I nodded to myself in approval at how clean it was. The bed was made, the laundry was in the hamper, and the bathroom was spic and span, just how I liked it. Rae looked around in disgust.

“It’s like you don’t even live here,” she grumbled as she flopped down on the bed.

“Can I get you anything?”

She grunted something as she climbed under the covers, and then she was out.

“Rae?”

She didn’t make a single noise. I walked over to the window and drew the blinds so she wasn’t woken up in the morning. Then I grabbed some medicine out of the cabinet and set it by the bed in case she needed it. I’d grab water from the kitchen in a minute.

Shutting the door behind me, I headed back to the kitchen where Bowie was waiting. “So, you finally got her to come home with you.”

“She has a concussion.”

He nodded slightly. “That makes more sense.” He dug into his dinner, ignoring me once again.

“What are you saying? You don’t think I could get her otherwise?”

“Duke, I hate to point this out, but you’ve been after Rae for like…two years. If you haven’t achieved anything yet, it’s not happening.”

“She’s here, isn’t she?” I growled.

“Uh…yeah. With a concussion. How did you manage to convince her to come back here?”

“I didn’t, actually. It was her suggestion.”

There. That would shut him up.

“Okay, and why did she suggest it?”

Damn, I thought he might stop asking questions. “She was in the hospital and didn’t want to be there.”
