I let out a long sigh. “Fuck, do you think it’ll go on much longer?”

“I don’t know, but if it does, we should consider getting a rug at the very least. And maybe a snack cabinet down here. I’m fucking starving.”

“She can’t stay out there too much longer,” I said, not really believing it.

“Can’t she?” he quipped.

We both sighed as she once again started pounding on the door. This day was never going to end.

Carly worked a pretty steady schedule, so I ventured out to the grocery store the next morning when I knew she would be working. I couldn’t keep going to the diner for food. That would only end badly for me. Besides, I was a good cook when I put the effort in. Well, I was decent.

But my pantry was seriously lacking, so I had to load up on pretty much everything in the store. I rounded the corner, only to run smack dab into the woman that filled every fantasy in my mind. Her eyebrow quirked as her eyes roamed over my chest. Today, I was wearing a fitted t-shirt and jeans, not my usual coveralls. And I could tell she appreciated it.

“Hey, Dukey,” she chirped at me.

My desire for her immediately raged. Only she could call me that and elicit a burning need from me.

“Rae,” I growled, shifting my stance so she couldn’t skirt around me.

“Shopping for dinner?”

“And then some.”

She cocked her head mockingly at me. “Why not just go to the diner and see your girlfriend? I’m sure she’d give you everything you need.”

My molars ground together in irritation. The last thing I wanted was to see Carly again. “I like to cook.”

“Really?” she said in surprise. Then she shrugged and tried to step around me. I moved more, completely blocking her path. Her eyes drifted up to meet mine, and I didn’t miss the desire lingering in their depths. So, why was she trying so hard to fight this?

“Why don’t you come over for dinner?”

Yeah, it was a shock to me too. I hadn’t intended to invite her over. Hell, I wasn’t even sure my house was presentable, but the opportunity was too good to resist.

“And why would I do that?”

“Because you want to.”

She scoffed, turning her head away from me. “I can guarantee you, I don’t want to have dinner with you.”

“Why? Scared I might finally get you to bend?”

Her gaze snapped to mine at the challenge. Yeah, she didn’t like the tone of my voice. “You’re mistaken if you think I’m scared of anything.”

“Oh, Rae, I know you’re not scared of anything. That was clear when you had a bomb strapped to your chest.”

“Then what exactly do you think you’re going to get out of this?”

“A night of fun.”

She tossed her head back and laughed. “With me? Are you delusional?”

“Maybe.”

She stepped closer, her face just inches from my chest. She was such a peanut, but a deadly one, at that. “The only fun I want to have is solving a case.”

“You know what they say, getting your mind off things can help you see clearer.”
